SMALL NEWARK MOTORCYCLE WORKSHOP WINS BIG AGAIN
Independent motorcycle sales and service centre MIS UK Ltd, based in Newark, has been crowned Best Motorcycle Sales & Service Centre – Nottinghamshire for 2025.
It is the third year in a row this small but passionate team has scooped the award, presented by SME News in recognition of customer satisfaction and reputation.
With just three full-time staff, MIS UK continues to stand out against much larger competitors. The business was founded five years ago by Bob Thomson, a former film industry entrepreneur, who swapped movie cameras for motorcycles.
“We are not here to chase big profits. Good job too, because we absolutely don’t! We are enthusiasts first and foremost. Making customers happy and keeping them safe on two wheels is what really drives us,” said Bob.
The workshop has earned a loyal following among riders of all types, offering everything from modern superbike servicing to classic bike rebuilds. The team is known for their friendly, straight-talking approach and real passion for the bikes they work on.
Workshop Manager Carl Cripps leads day-to-day operations and also races competitively for the MIS Motorcycle Race Team in the BMRCC series.
“This is a tough industry with a lot of big players. For a small independent like us to keep winning awards really means a lot. We stay focused on giving our customers the best possible service, whether they’ve been with us for years or it’s their first visit,” said Carl.
Lead mechanic Alex Jones, who trained originally on Mercedes-Benz cars, has been part of the team for the past two years.
“We might be a small team, but we all share the same goal: do the best job we can, take real pride in our work and make sure every bike leaves here safe and sound. Winning this again feels fantastic,” said Alex.
MIS UK continues to grow through word of mouth and rider recommendations, proving that passion and personal service still count for a lot in the motorcycle world.

First race went with a bad start,I launched in 2nd by mistake but had to ride it out with clutch slip I then worked my way through the pack passing 6 other bikes to finish 9th after starting 15th on the grid.

Starting the next race in a much better position on the grid.

MIS UK is the ill conceived idea of two old farts who really should know better. Dennis and Bob met at school in the 1970’s Dennis had an FS1E Bob a Puch Maxi, this huge discrepancy led Bob into the next few decades, where he proceeded to acquire all the bikes he wished he could have had back in the 1970’s. Whilst Bob acquired bikes and developed a career in the film industry, Dennis went how own way via the Royal Airforce into computing and general management. This is where the story should probably have ended, but after selling his business in 2017 Bob was looking for a new adventure and as the garage was by now full of bikes he decided to look to develop a small business buying, selling, storing and restoring bikes. This was the only way he reckoned he could still play with his toys whilst convincing his long suffering wife he was actually ‘working’. One problem was that Bob didn't know one end of a spanner from the other and needed some practical help. Thanks to social media Bob and Dennis had reconnected and after hardly any thought at all MIS was born. This is a business where we are looking to have some fun buying and selling bikes, our business overheads are kept very low so we can look to provide our clients with an excellent service and classic bikes at reasonable prices. We would only recommend bike enthusiasts ‘invest’ in classic bikes as there is no guarantee of future values, but if you like bikes spending a few £££ on a classic bike is a lot more fun than putting it in the bank. So if your looking to buy or sell a classic bike, need a free valuation or advice dont hesitate to get in touch.
