2016 BMW 640d M Sport (N57D30B) booked in with us for what was intended to be routine preventative maintenance, combining a timing chain replacement with a bottom-end bearing refresh.

Unfortunately, once the engine was removed and stripped, it became clear this one had just missed the window.

Number 1 main bearing had already begun to fail, damaging the crankshaft journal. Rod bearings on cylinders 3 and 6 had also started to pick up, confirming that a simple bearing refresh was no longer an option.

This is exactly why we always say prevention only works if it’s carried out in time. Leave it a little too long and what could have been a relatively straightforward bearing refresh quickly becomes a full bottom-end rebuild.

🤔 Ever wondered what walnut blasting actually does?

This video shows exactly why it’s one of the best maintenance jobs you can carry out on a modern BMW diesel.

On direct injection engines, fuel is injected straight into the combustion chamber, so unlike older engines, diesel never washes over the intake valves. Instead, a mixture of oil vapour from the crankcase breather and soot from the EGR system gradually coats the intake ports and valves with thick carbon deposits.

Over time, these deposits can:
• Restrict airflow into the engine
• Reduce performance and throttle response
• Affect fuel economy
• Contribute to rougher running and hesitation
• Reduce engine efficiency

Walnut blasting is the safest and most effective way of removing these deposits.

Using compressed air, crushed walnut shell media is blasted onto the carbon build-up. The walnut shell is abrasive enough to strip away stubborn carbon, but soft enough that it won’t damage the aluminium cylinder head or the hardened steel valves.

Take a look at the video… one intake port and valve has just been cleaned, while the others are still covered in years of carbon build-up. The difference speaks for itself.

This is a service we often recommend while carrying out timing chain replacements, as the intake manifold is already removed, making it the ideal opportunity to restore airflow and engine efficiency.

Sometimes the biggest improvements aren’t made by adding power… they’re made by giving the engine back the airflow it had when it left the factory.

2015 BMW 330d M Sport (N57D30A) in with us for our renowned same-day timing chain replacement service, along with walnut blasting of the intake ports.

A timing chain replacement is about far more than simply fitting a new chain. The quality of the components and the standard of installation are what determine how long the repair will last.

For this vehicle, we fitted a complete genuine BMW timing chain system, installed and timed precisely to BMW factory specification and backed by our 2-year unlimited mileage warranty.

While the engine was apart, we also carried out walnut blasting of the intake ports.

On direct injection engines like the N57, carbon deposits gradually build up inside the intake ports due to the EGR system and crankcase ventilation. Over time this restricts airflow, reducing engine efficiency and performance.

2017 BMW 320d SE (B47D20A) in with us after the owner reported heavy exhaust smoke and excessive oil consumption.

Initial diagnosis pointed towards turbocharger failure. However, before replacing any parts, we always investigate why the component has failed.

A quick inspection of the oil filter told the story. Heavy contamination and sludge deposits indicated the engine had suffered from extended service intervals and poor oil maintenance, the most common cause of premature turbocharger failure on these engines.

Simply fitting another turbo without addressing the cause would only be storing up problems for the future.

• Reconditioned turbocharger supplied and fitted from our stock

Once reassembled and thoroughly tested, the engine was back to running cleanly with no smoke, correct boost pressure and no oil passing through the exhaust.

2016 BMW 320d M Sport (B47D20A) recovered into us after suffering a turbocharger runaway, resulting in a seized engine.

Unfortunately, once an engine begins running uncontrollably on its own oil, there’s very little that can be done. By the time this one arrived with us, the engine had seized solid, leaving replacement as the only viable option.

Rather than cutting corners, the customer opted to have the job carried out properly.

2015 BMW 335d M Sport Touring xDrive (N57D30B) recovered into us with a knocking engine.

By the time an N57 starts knocking, the damage is usually already done. Strip-down on this one confirmed multiple failed main and rod bearings, causing catastrophic damage to the crankshaft and engine block, along with metallic contamination throughout the lubrication system.

The crankshaft was beyond repair, the original block was unusable, and a full rebuild was the only sensible option.

There are plenty of ways to rebuild an engine.

We only believe in one.
