✅ A – Air pressure: Check pressures against the correct recommendations for your vehicle and trailer.
✅ C – Condition: Look for cuts, cracks, bulges and signs of damage or deterioration.
✅ T – Tread: Check tread depth and look for uneven wear.

🚛 Checking the towing vehicle? Remember the trailer too!

Whether you’re towing a horsebox, plant trailer, tipper or garden trailer, include its tyres in your checks before every journey—even if it hasn’t been used for a while.

A tyre can have plenty of tread and still show signs of ageing or damage. Don’t wait for a breakdown or near miss to give it attention.

Having now completed my training in tail lift servicing and maintenance, I’m pleased to be adding this service alongside my existing LOLER examinations.

🔧 WHY DO I KEEP MENTIONING PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE?

Because I’d much rather spot a worn bearing, a sticking brake or a damaged tyre during a service than hear you’ve broken down at the roadside with a loaded trailer.

It’s about catching the small problems before they become big ones.

A trailer can still tow with defects developing. Just because it made it through the last journey doesn’t mean everything underneath is as it should be.

And “it’s hardly been used” doesn’t always mean it’s in good condition. Damp, corrosion and ageing tyres don’t stop when you park it up.

Regular servicing helps you:
✅ Find wear and defects early.
✅ Reduce the risk of breakdowns and costly repairs.
✅ Avoid unexpected time off the road.
✅ Protect your load and help keep everyone safer.

A planned service is easier to fit into your diary than an unexpected breakdown.

Are you using a trailer for work?
Trailer safety is your responsibility!

Trailers used for work fall under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
This means they must be suitable for the job, maintained in a safe condition and inspected where deterioration could create a safety risk.

Worn brakes, damaged tyres, loose wheel bearings, defective couplings and rotten floors can put you, your employees and other road users at risk.

✅ Carry out checks before use
✅ Arrange servicing and inspections appropriate to the trailer’s use, condition and manufacturer’s guidance
✅ Keep inspection records and details of repairs
✅ Take unsafe trailers out of use until defects are rectified
✅ Ensure users know how to couple, load and operate the trailer safely

PUWER does not set one fixed servicing interval for every trailer. Your maintenance and inspection schedule should reflect how often it works and the conditions it faces.

At Ben Owen Services Ltd, we provide trailer servicing, repairs and safety inspections for trailers up to 3.5 tonnes, with detailed service sheets for your records.

🛠️ FREE TRAILER SAFETY CHECKS 🛠️

As an NTTA 5-Star Quality Secured Accredited Workshop, I’m pleased to offer free trailer safety checks for braked and unbraked trailers up to 3,500kg.

I’ll carry out a visual inspection of the trailer, checking key safety areas such as the tyres, brakes, lights, coupling, breakaway cable, chassis, suspension and general condition.

The findings and any recommendations will then be compiled into a check sheet, giving the owner a clear picture of the trailer’s condition and highlighting anything that may require further attention.

Please note that this is a visual safety check and does not replace a full trailer service—but it can help identify potential problems before they become dangerous or expensive.

✅ LOLER examinations completed today

Today I visited Ian and Lloyd Watson Haulage Ltd in Bronington to carry out LOLER thorough examinations on their two Moffetts and two forklifts.

All four passed, with detailed check sheets and LOLER certification issued. ✅

Keeping examinations up to date is essential for identifying wear and potentially dangerous defects, protecting operators and meeting your legal responsibilities.

Examinations are generally required every 12 months for equipment lifting goods and 6 months for lifting accessories or equipment lifting people, unless a competent person’s written examination scheme specifies different intervals. Always follow the next examination date on your report.
