A grass fire is spreading rapidly on Formby beach. Fortunately, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service’s magnificent Scania fire engine has arrived to lend a helping hand.

A UK first as John G Russell Transport takes ownership of three prototype Scania hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), becoming the first UK operator to put the technology into daily real-world operations on UK roads.

The three vehicles will enter full real-world testing as part of the ZENFreight project, part of the Zero Emission HGVs & Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

Developed by Scania’s Pilot Partner division in Sweden, the vehicles are part of a European prototype fleet of 16 fuel-cell trucks being tested with customers to explore the viability and use cases of hydrogen-powered transport.

Built on Scania’s 6x2*4 battery electric truck platform, the trucks combine a 400kW electric machine, 416kWh installed battery capacity and 300kW Cummins fuel cell engine, with up to 56kg of hydrogen storage. The hybrid powertrain provides a predicted total range of up to 850km, with the electric motor and fuel cell able to operate independently, together or with the fuel cell acting as a range extender.

An important step towards understanding the role hydrogen can play in the future of sustainable heavy transport.
