Here’s a great before-and-after comparison from a recent job at Ignition Autos.

⚡ WHY ARE SPARK PLUGS SO IMPORTANT?

Spark plugs ignite the air and fuel mixture inside a petrol engine. Over time, they naturally wear and the electrode gap can increase, making it harder for the ignition system to produce a strong, consistent spark.

Worn spark plugs can contribute to:

❌ Difficult starting
❌ Engine misfires
❌ Rough running or poor idle
❌ Reduced performance
❌ Increased fuel consumption
❌ Engine management lights
❌ Additional strain on ignition coils

🔧 WHAT’S THE FIX?

🔧 WALNUT BLASTING – LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE! 👀

This is why we don’t just guess when it comes to carbon build-up.

This video shows a before and after of walnut blasting, carried out here at Ignition Autos. You can see the carbon contamination around the inlet area before cleaning, followed by the results once the walnut blasting process has done its job. 💨🔧

On direct-injection engines, carbon deposits can build up around the inlet valves and ports, restricting airflow and potentially contributing to issues such as:

🔧 IGNITION AUTOS – VOLVO OIL LEAK 🔧

Here’s another real workshop example of why oil leaks need properly investigating rather than simply cleaning the engine and hoping for the best.

In this video, Martin, our technician over at Edward Street Garage, takes us underneath the bonnet of this Volvo and shows exactly where oil is visible around the top of the engine/rocker cover area and surrounding components.

🛢️ WHY DOES AN OIL LEAK MATTER?

Even a leak that initially appears relatively small can worsen over time. Escaping engine oil can spread across surrounding components, cause the engine oil level to drop and make it increasingly difficult to determine the original source if it's left unattended.

Potential symptoms include:

❌ Oil visible around the engine
❌ Burning oil smells
❌ Oil dripping underneath the vehicle
❌ Falling engine oil level
❌ Smoke if oil reaches hot components

🔧 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Once the source has been confirmed, the affected seal/gasket or component needs repairing or replacing as required, followed by cleaning and rechecking the area to ensure the leak has been rectified.

This is exactly why our technicians use photos and videos to show customers what we're seeing rather than simply telling them their vehicle has an oil leak.

🔧 CARBON BUILD-UP – A COMMON PROBLEM ON MODERN ENGINES 🔧

This photo is a great example of what can happen inside the intake system of a modern engine.

The component being held is the boost/manifold pressure sensor, and you can see that the end of the sensor has become heavily contaminated with carbon deposits.

⚠️ WHAT’S GONE WRONG?

Carbon and soot have built up inside the intake manifold, to the point where the pressure sensor is becoming blocked. When this happens, the sensor may no longer be able to accurately measure the pressure and airflow conditions inside the manifold.

This can contribute to:

❌ Engine management lights
❌ Loss of power / poor performance
❌ Incorrect boost readings
❌ Poor running
❌ DPF/EGR-related problems
❌ Fault codes and limp mode

🔧 WHAT DOES IT NEED?

Simply cleaning or replacing the sensor doesn’t address the carbon build-up that caused the problem.

In this case, the intake system requires a proper carbon clean/walnut blasting procedure to remove the accumulated deposits and restore airflow through the affected areas. The sensor can then be cleaned or replaced as required before the system is reassembled and tested.

☕ SUNDAY WORKSHOP INSIGHT – HAVE A LOOK INSIDE THIS TURBO! 👀🔧

Hope everyone’s having a relaxing Sunday!

While you’re enjoying a bit of downtime, here’s Martin, our Head Diagnostic Technician from within the Ignition Motor Group, giving us a closer look at this Jeep.

Rather than simply telling the customer there’s a problem with the turbo, Martin gets the inspection camera right inside so we can physically examine the turbo compressor wheel and blades and show exactly what we're looking at.

This is something we think is really important.

When we're recommending potentially expensive repairs, wherever possible we want to show the evidence, explain what we've found and help the customer understand why the repair is required.

🔵🔧 DPF SPECIALISTS – IT’S NOT ALWAYS “JUST NEEDS A CLEAN”!

Here’s Dan and John carrying out a closer inspection of a DPF here at Ignition Autos.

During the investigation, our technicians have identified something important — a crack within the DPF itself.

And this is exactly why we don't automatically clean a DPF just because a warning light is on or a DPF-related fault code is stored.

A DPF problem can be the result of another issue elsewhere on the vehicle, and simply cleaning the filter without understanding why the problem occurred may not provide the correct repair.

Our approach is to diagnose the complete system first. 🔍

That can mean looking at:

🔵 DPF condition and soot loading
🔵 Differential pressure readings
🔵 Exhaust temperature data
🔵 Sensors and associated pipework
🔵 Regeneration history and operation
🔵 Engine-related issues that could be contributing to the problem
🔵 And, as this video demonstrates, the physical condition of the DPF itself

A DPF is designed to regenerate and burn accumulated soot under the correct conditions, while other faults within the vehicle can interfere with that process.

🔧 WET BELT REPLACEMENT – IGNITION AUTOS MIDDLEWICH 🔧

Does your vehicle have a wet timing belt? If so, keeping on top of its condition and replacement interval is extremely important.

Unlike a traditional timing belt, a wet belt runs inside the engine oil. As it deteriorates, belt material can break down and contaminate the oil system, potentially restricting oil flow and leading to serious and expensive engine damage.
