P0a80 is the most common hybrid code. It indicates your hybrid battery has some weakness in the cells.
It’s important for the overall battery to repair this quickly, as it’s almost always caused by heat affecting a few cells.
The heat caused in the middle of the 28 cell pack, normally by dust or a blocked fan.
This heat causes the liquid electrolyte to generate pressure thus expanding those cells.
The cells are clamped together so lack the ability to expand so the pressure pushes in and causes small cracks in the affected cells. This in turn produces a run away event which eventually destroys the cell .
In that process the affected cells lose capacity as they degrade which is the reason the battery meter for the car charges and discharges very quick as the BMS uses the weakest cells capacity as the limits for the whole battery charge, this is done so as not to create a dangerous charge explosion which is what would happen if you allowed damaged cells to overcharge.
In 95% of cases repairing is far more cost effective than replacement.
Always chose a company who repairs your original battery as opposed to exchange as you never know the age and contents of the new pack even if appears to be working for a short while.
