Though no 'expert' on cam design despite the best efforts and patient tutorledge of my mate Graham Russell in Oz I am slowly getting to grips with this complex subject. Helped by some basic and easy to understand factors laid out by Comp Cams in the USA. I have had many a dissusion on how this subject works. This outlines the basic details. Hope this comes out clearly..

A very pleasant day spent at Cadwell Park race circuit watching my newest Formula Junior customer have fun. Despite the changeable weather, the day was interesting and enjoyable. And Taff brought the car home in one piece. It's a BMC Huffaker car, such a well-proportioned attractive car.

In a previous post somebody asked how I wss clocking pistons in the block. Answer - like this. Bridge is steel so it outweighs the pressure on the probe. In anticipation of being told I do not know what I am doing as I am not certficated and qualified.

And... especially for my top fan (must be true, FB stats say so!) David Walker.... more cam.followers with the tell-tale sombrero ring pattern. This set is out of a VERY high mileage standard 1275 A+ engine. Pitting starting to appear from inappropriate oil use during it's life. The cam lobes were in excellent condition.

This subject crops up now and then, somebody needing piston crowns machined down following a trial build once they have already been fitted to the rods (standard type interference fit wrist pins). You do not need a big lathe that will take the rod and the faff of wrapping the rods to stop them flayling around. Just an angle plate and some fasteners and spacers to hold the piston steady. Then mill the crown down with a fly cutter.

Sorting dizzy curves has been a real thing lately, thanks to my mate Adrian Dodd's tuning escapades. Many folk have asked me what a dizzy checking machine looks like, so here is one. Possibly the Rolls Royce of them, this one owned by my good friends at Damico Engines. As with all their machines and equipment in superb condition.

With my previous postings about the essential requirement for cam followers to have the correct face profile to create the necessary rotation, many have asked how to recognise if their followers are working properly. Given herds of illustrations of what they look like when it goes pear-shaped, and a description of the 'sombrero rings' when they are working as they should - THIS is the sombrero ring pattern described. Made abjectly clear here by inappropriate oil. But an excellent illustration.

And yet another Mini steel flywheel and clutch set up to sort to optimise clamping capability. This really ought not be necessary, but as supplied the clamping capability falls well short of what it should. A bunch of measurements followed by corrective machining before balancing.

Gotta love it when you are supplied a brand spanking new £2500 EN40B Nitrided bespoke crank made to the crank machining company's own drawings comes through with over-sized main bearings (barely 0.001" max clearance on 2.125" diameter journals) and not parallel. Sheesh.
