Project NSX – Underside Restoration & Mechanical Overhaul
This project began back in November 2024, when Jordan entrusted us with his newly purchased dream car – a 1991 Honda NSX NA1.
The original plan? A general health check and major service: full service, cambelt, water pump, valve clearances and a thorough inspection, as you do with any new purchase.
Safe to say… things escalated quickly.
We uncovered significant oil leaks from the rocker covers and camshaft seals, a high clutch biting point, and brakes that didn’t inspire confidence. With that in mind, the decision was made to remove the engine and gearbox to address the leaks, clutch and carry out the major service properly.
That’s when the reality of working on a 30+ year old, aluminium-built NSX set in.
Steel fixings + aluminium + decades of corrosion = seized and snapped bolts galore. Preserving OEM components while dealing with this is never easy, but it’s exactly where experience matters.
Once stripped, the entire underside, engine and gearbox were dry ice blasted, removing years of oil, underseal, mud and road grime. This gave us a clean, damage-free base to work from and revealed exactly what needed restoring.
The major engine work included:
• Timing belt, water pump & tensioners
• Fresh oil & oil filter
• Both Crankshaft seals
• LMA (Lost Motion Assembly) conversion to springs + Valve Clearances
• Refurbished rocker covers
• Replacement of every possible seal and O-ring, including the badly leaking camshaft seals
• VTEC solenoids were stripped and cleaned with new seals
From there, we moved onto a full underside restoration. Every component was assessed – saved where possible and replaced where necessary. Parts were media blasted and finished in Cerakote, powder coat or zinc plating, returning the underside to a better-than-factory finish.
Just some of the additional work included:
• Full brake overhaul with new pistons & seals, finished in Cerakote
• Fuel tank fully stripped and repainted gloss black + New fuel pump
• New coilover suspension fitted with protection socks.
• Steering rack fully dismantled, cleaned, reassembled, and regreased.
• New Buddyclub P1 alloys painted and fitted.
• Complete new coolant hoses throughout the car.
• AC system all renewed.
Honestly, it would be easier to list what hasn’t been touched on this car.
However, to finish, we fabricated a custom exhaust system featuring an X-pipe and G-Sport catalytic converters, allowing that naturally aspirated V6 to finally sound as good as it looks.
The photos really do speak for themselves.
An incredible transformation, and another iconic car saved and future-proofed for many more years of enjoyment.
If you’re looking for high-end restoration, mechanical overhauls, or bespoke fabrication, this is exactly what we do.
