We’re big fans of the wild builds! Chevy small block engine swaps, BMW M57 engine conversions, Mercedes OM606 engine powerhouses and everything in between that pushes a Defender to its limits.

Building or already driving an M57-powered Defender? Then you’re officially in the “how fast do I want to go vs. how noisy do I want it to be?” club. The LT230 transfer box ratio you choose makes a huge difference to how the truck feels. You’ve basically got three flavours to pick from: 1.2, 1.1, and 1.003.

If you’re regularly towing plant, trailers, or other questionable “that’ll be fine” loads — and you live on twisty B-roads — the 1.2 ratio is your friend. It keeps the revs up and the torque right where you need it for pulling, but expect the engine to get shouty once you’re pushing past 50 mph.

At the other end of the spectrum, 1.003 is the tallest ratio you can get. This is the one for motorway warriors and commuters who don’t want their Defender screaming at them for three hours. The M57 has more than enough grunt to pull it, and it makes cruising genuinely pleasant.

Can’t decide? Want a Defender that can tow, cruise, and still make you giggle on a B-road? Then 1.1 is the Goldilocks spec — the all-rounder that suits most builds and driving styles.

Bottom line: think about how you actually use your truck, not how you wish you used it. The right ratio turns an M57 conversion from “cool project” into “daily grin machine.”

Those rare few days between Christmas and New Year’s when it feels like you’re floating outside the calendar have always been my favorite time of year. It seems like a brief, if not the only, period free of responsibilities. All the tasks from the past year are complete, and those that aren’t can patiently wait until January. This is my time to work care-free and fully focused on something just for me. Some years I completely reorganize my workshop or shed at home; this year, I get to work on a little Land Rover I’ve dreamed of building for years. At the end of the day, no matter the project, I spend half an hour to an hour simply looking at and enjoying what I’ve achieved.

Most of us in the mechanical industry entered it through a passion for understanding how things work a fascination with the methodical components conceived, designed, and crafted by people. For many of us, this curiosity took root in childhood.

Pursuing a career fueled by passion is rare. There’s no doubt that you’ll achieve more in something you love than in something you feel no connection to. A reality that many find themselves facing. Yet turning a passion into a business can sometimes dim that love. Make time for yourself!

I speak mostly to men, though I deeply appreciate all the female mechanical enthusiasts out there. Make time for yourselves, whether it’s an afternoon in the shed sorting and organizing nuts and bolts, or planning a project on paper. A society of relentless expectations and responsibilities will take every little piece of you if you don’t carve out space for your own joy.

I would love to see any men or women post a picture in the comments of something they made time for!

Project Little Ben – Update

Bringing this project up to a standard we’re truly proud of has taken time—something we’re always short of—but we’re nearly there. The new tunnel is now complete; it’s a direct pattern of the original, with an added opening for the gear linkages and the redundant holes removed.

What remains is the finalising of the handbrake mount, as this transmission upgrade uses the Defender handbrake setup, and fitting the gators/boots for the gearsticks.

A video update will be uploaded to YouTube later this week.
