🔧 Audi Q3 in at Red Oak Garage

This Q3 came back to us after we’d previously advised the customer that the suspension arms were due for replacement.

We’ve now replaced the arms and got it finished off with a Hunter 4-wheel alignment to make sure everything is set up exactly as it should be. 👌

It’s always good to get these jobs sorted before worn suspension starts causing uneven tyre wear or affecting how the car drives.

This BMW M2 Competition looked great… until we got it in the air.

A customer brought this BMW M2 Competition to us for a pre-purchase inspection before committing to the car.

On first glance, everything looked spot on. But once we got underneath it, we found the tyres were in a pretty poor state and would need replacing.

That’s exactly the sort of thing you don’t want to discover after you’ve handed over your money 😬

What we found:
The tyres were in poor condition and showing enough concern that replacement was needed.

What we recommended:
2 tyres to be replaced, along with a hunter 4-wheel alignment to check and correct the geometry and help prevent further unusual tyre wear.

The outcome:
We picked up the issue before the purchase went ahead, potentially saving the customer hundreds of pounds in tyres and, more importantly, preventing them from driving away on tyres that really shouldn’t have been on the road.

This is exactly why a proper pre-purchase inspection can be worth every penny.

A car can look perfect on the outside, but sometimes the things you can’t see are the things that matter most.

🔧 WHAT’S ON THE RAMP?
This week we’ve got a MINI in at Red Oak Garage for a timing chain replacement.

A common area of concern on these engines, so if you’ve noticed a rattling noise on start-up, unusual engine noise or poor running, it’s worth getting it checked before it turns into a much bigger repair.

This one is getting a proper strip-down and inspection, with the timing chain kit and all relevant components being replaced before everything is timed up and checked correctly. This is quite a substantial job on these as the timing chain is on the back of the engine!

🔧 JAGUAR E-PACE – ENGINE LIGHT ON? THIS WAS THE CAUSE.
This Jaguar E-Pace 2.0 Ingenium diesel came in with the engine management light illuminated.
After carrying out the correct diagnostics, we traced the fault to a blocked EGR filter. The photo shows the old contaminated filter alongside the clean replacement — a clear example of just how restricted these can become.
On these 2.0 Ingenium diesels, EGR contamination is something we see regularly. As soot and deposits build up, airflow through the system can become restricted and trigger faults.
Some of the signs can include:
Engine management light coming on
Loss of performance
Hesitation under acceleration
Limp mode
Repeat EGR-related fault codes
The important thing is not to simply clear the warning light and hope it stays off. The cause of the fault needs to be found and corrected properly.
If your engine light is on or your vehicle isn’t driving as it should, get it checked before the problem develops further.

Today’s routine service picked up something that could easily have become a serious safety issue — badly worn tyres with very little usable tread left.
Tyres are your vehicle’s only contact with the road, so tread condition matters far more than many people realise.
Poor tread can mean:
Reduced grip in wet weather
Longer braking distances
A greater risk of aquaplaning
Less control under braking or cornering
These tyres were spotted during a routine service and replaced before the problem became any worse.
It’s a good example of why servicing isn’t just about oil and filters. A proper inspection gives us the chance to spot wear and potential safety issues before they become expensive — or dangerous.

🔧 RANGE ROVER VELAR – WHEN ONE PROBLEM KEEPS COMING BACK, LOOK FOR THE CAUSE.

This 2.0 Ingenium Range Rover Velar came to us with a number of issues, including an EGR system that keeps blocking up.

One of the biggest clues was right there at the back of the vehicle — soot on the tailpipes.

The DPF is designed to capture soot before the exhaust gases reach the tailpipes. When we're seeing this level of soot at the exhaust, it gives us an important indication that the DPF isn't doing its job properly.

And that's where the problems can start to snowball.

A failing DPF can allow excessive soot through the system, with soot being recirculated back through the EGR system. The result? Carbon build-up, repeated EGR blockages and potentially more problems further down the line.

This is a common issue we see on these 2.0 Ingenium engines.

Simply dealing with the blocked EGR without identifying why it keeps blocking isn't solving the problem.

At Red Oak Garage, our approach is to diagnose the root cause, not just keep treating the symptom.

🚗 Coolant loss with no obvious leak? It might not be as simple as topping it up...
This vehicle came into Red Oak Garage with a coolant loss issue that wasn't immediately obvious. After carrying out a full inspection, we traced the fault to a failed EGR cooler.
The internal failure was allowing coolant to leak into the exhaust system, which in turn had begun to block the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Left unresolved, faults like this can lead to reduced performance, repeated warning lights, costly repairs and, in some cases, serious engine damage.
This is why proper diagnosis is so important.
Rather than replacing parts based on assumptions, we identified the root cause first. By finding the original fault, we can recommend the correct repair and prevent the same problem from returning.

Timing belt failure doesn't always mean the end of the engine.
This vehicle arrived with a failed timing belt, which had caused damage to the top end of the engine. While it can be one of the most serious mechanical failures a vehicle can suffer, it doesn't always mean the engine needs replacing.
