The countdown is on... Dartmouth Royal Regatta Sailing Week and the GBR IRC Rating Nationals are now just over two weeks away - and things are shaping up beautifully. Huge congratulations to our colleague Sally Moss, part of the winning crew aboard the 1978 Nordic Folkboat TATTARAT in this year’s Round the Island Race! 🏆

Sally and her husband, Simon, own TATTARAT and raced with fellow crew members Cy Grisley and Matthew Wright. Together, they delivered an outstanding performance to win the prestigious Gold Roman Bowl for best corrected time under IRC Rating.

Reflecting on the victory after the race, Simon said what made the achievement even more special was sharing it with family and friends, a sentiment that perfectly captures the teamwork, trust and enjoyment at the heart of their success.

Everyone at the RORC Rating Office is incredibly proud of Sally and delighted for the entire TATTARAT crew on winning one of the UK’s most iconic yacht races. We know that there will be extended and very well-deserved celebrations!

Today, we're delighted to welcome Rob Taylor to the RORC Rating Office as Deputy Director.

A qualified naval architect, experienced regulator, former World Sailing and RYA sailing administrator, and active offshore racer, Rob brings a blend of technical, regulatory and practical racing expertise to further enhance our experienced team. His appointment further strengthens our capability in IRC rating, safety, measurement services and race organisation, supporting sailors and events around the world.

Calculating corrected time under IRC Rating is simple: elapsed time × TCC. But have you ever wished your TCC was exactly 1.000, so your corrected time matched your elapsed time? Or, would you rather have a TCC below 1.000 — a more favourable rating — or above 1.000, reflecting a faster boat?

Across the currently rated worldwide IRC fleet, just 21 boats have a TCC of exactly 1.000.

At the extremes, the range runs from a diminutive Cornish Shrimper on 0.709 to the Verdier 100 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘵 𝘌 on 1.944.

That breadth of variety is part of what makes IRC so versatile, allowing a wonderfully diverse range of boats to take part. Of course, like all rating systems, IRC works best when similar types and speeds of boats race directly against each other wherever possible.
