What our Caribbean guests say when they get home, without exception:

"The photos don't do it justice."

They're right. The water in the Tobago Cays is a colour that cameras render slightly wrong - a shade between turquoise and aquamarine that in real life is so vivid it looks artificial. The clarity of it is something you can only appreciate when you're swimming in it, looking down through fifteen feet of water at the reef below.

No photograph captures the warmth of the trade winds at six in the morning. No photograph captures the sound of the water against the hull at anchor in a bay you've had to yourselves all night.

The thing about Corsica that surprises people who haven't been:

It doesn't feel French. Not quite. There's a fierce, particular Corsican identity - in the language (Corsu, distinct from French), in the food (charcuterie and sheep's cheese from the maquis-covered interior), in the architecture of the coastal towns - that makes it feel like a separate country.

From the sea, it is one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe. The calanques of the south - narrow inlets cut into white limestone cliffs - are only accessible by boat.

Totally awesome.

Two words that don't appear often enough in luxury travel writing, but which are, in our honest professional opinion, the most accurate description of a week in the Caribbean on our skippered catamaran.

The Tobago Cays marine park. The anchorage at Salt Whistle Bay, Mayreau. The crossing from Bequia to Mustique with the trade wind on the beam and the boat fully powered up. The rum punch at the bar off Union Island that has been there longer than any of us.

We're about to leave for Sardinia - and we want you to feel appropriately envious.

Here is what the next two weeks look like: Olbia airport, taxi to the marina, step aboard. Spend the first evening in the bay behind Tavolara island - one of the great anchorages in the western Mediterranean. Wake up to a view that makes the alarm clock feel like a reasonable invention.

Then north. Into the Maddalena. Across to Corsica to the stunning cliffs of Bonifacio.

If you ask us to describe British Columbia in one sentence, we struggle.

If you ask us to describe it in one image, it's this:

You're on deck at 9pm. The sky is still light - golden, fading slowly at the edges of the mountains. The channel ahead of you is mirror-calm. On the port shore, a grizzly bear is working the tideline, turning stones, unhurried. On the starboard shore, a bald eagle is doing nothing in particular in the top of a dead Sitka spruce.

Nobody speaks. There's nothing to say.

We talk a lot about Croatia and Sardinia and the Caribbean - because they're extraordinary and they deserve every word.

But every so often someone asks us: "What's the most spectacular thing you've ever seen from a boat?"

The answer is always British Columbia in Canada.

An orca pod working a channel at close range - the dorsal fins, the breathing, the unhurried intelligence of them.

Old-growth cedar coming down to the waterline on both sides with no road, no building, no sign of anything human for as far as you can see in either direction.

A humpback surfacing thirty metres off the bow at dusk.

While we've been sailing Croatia and planning Sardinia, the Grenadines have been doing what they always do in late spring: being completely, unreasonably beautiful.

Trade wind at fifteen knots. Water temperature 28 degrees. The Tobago Cays looking exactly like the photograph that made you first want to go somewhere like this - except quieter, smaller, and better in every way than the photograph suggested.

Sardinia in June: what to expect.

By 9am, the sun is full and warm and the granite of the Maddalena islands is already glowing. The water shifts between twelve colours depending on depth - pale jade over sand, deepening through aquamarine to a blue that has no English name at the edge of the shoal.

Afternoons anchored in coves where the only decision is whether to swim first or eat first. Evenings in small harbours - Cannigione, La Maddalena town, Santa Teresa - where the aperitivo culture is taken as seriously as the sailing.
