Colombia's biodiversity is most visible and most astonishing, in Minca.

The small mountain village above the Caribbean coast sits at the edge of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta - the highest coastal mountain range in the world and one of the most biodiverse places on earth.

Within 30 kilometres of Minca's main square, the habitats range from tropical dry forest at sea level to páramo scrubland above 4,000 metres.

The birdlife alone justifies a day in Minca. Over 600 species have been recorded in the Sierra Nevada - including the Santa Marta parakeet, the Santa Marta antpitta and 11 other species found nowhere else on earth.

For anyone with any interest in wildlife, it is genuinely extraordinary.

The calm waterways of Desolation Sound in Canada are, in themselves, the experience.

Not the means to get somewhere. Not the backdrop to something else. The thing itself.

Cruising under power on calm days is how we explore Desolation Sound - through channels where the water is so still that both banks are perfectly reflected and the sky between them is mirrored below you.

Entering fjords that close around you on three sides with mountains so steep and so close that cloud forms partway up and doesn't reach the peaks.

The humpback whales of British Columbia are back.

After decades of commercial whaling reduced their population to near-zero in these waters, the humpbacks have been returning to the Inside Passage in increasing numbers - and the result, for anyone lucky enough to be on the water in Desolation Sound, is one of the great wildlife spectacles available anywhere on earth.

A humpback whale can reach 16 metres in length. Watching one surface 30 metres from the bow - the blow rising 5 metres into the still morning air, the long dark back arching slowly, the tail lifting clear of the water as it dives - is an encounter that rearranges your sense of scale in ways that nothing else quite manages.

The fjords of British Columbia's Inside Passage are majestic in a way that the word "majestic" is usually too worn-out to convey but here earns back its full meaning.

The irresistible appeal of a Croatia sailing holiday, from people who know it better than almost anyone.

The islands. 1,244 of them - the best ones are only reachable by yacht, known only to skippers who have spent years learning where they are and when to go.

The food. Grilled fish landed the same morning. Peka slow-cooked for three hours under a bell of embers. Oysters from Mali Ston eaten raw on the shell with lemon and nothing else.
