How much wine can your yacht carry?
It sounds like a joke... but historically, that's exactly what tonnage was measuring. The word tonnage comes from the medieval tun: a large cask holding around 252 gallons of wine. Port dues and taxes were once based on how many of these barrels a ship could carry, and the term eventually evolved into the tonnage calculations we still use today. So when Ben Cooper jokes in our latest podcast that a tonnage survey measures "how much wine you can carry," he's closer to the truth than you might think.

Today, a tonnage survey measures the enclosed volume of a yacht rather than its weight, and it's an important part of UK Part 1 Registration.
