CERAMIC COATING - 5

Where to get it?

Absolute best place to get it: Western Detailing, of course; but if you want to consider other options, here’s a bunch of tips to consider.
Make sure you do your homework before choosing the place. Usually a ceramic coating costs somewhere between £300-900, which is quite a hefty amount, make sure you get your money’s worth.

Word of Mouth recommendations work best, especially if the person recommending is a previous customers. Direct recommendations work best; google reviews is a close second.

Installing ceramic coatings is a meticulous job; preparing for the installation is even more time consuming, so I recommend to prioritise your local small shop or mobile detailer, who takes his time and has pride in his work, and steer clear of the corporations that care only about numbers, do a rushed job so they can get the next one in.
So many times the customer said “it has a ceramic coating installed” and when I did the water beading test the car had absolutely no protection installed.

Just a few questions left and you will be able to make an informed decision on Ceramic Coatings: Who is it for? Can you DIY? How much it costs? Is it better than regular wax? Should I get it?

CERAMIC COATINGS - Part 4

How does it work?

The ceramic coating comes in a small bottle: 30ml to - 50ml. Yes, that tiny bottle is enough to cover a large SUV; windows, plastic trims, headlights etc.

It’s usually applied with a specifically designed applicator panel by panel then buffed off.

The coating forms a bond with the clear-coat and hardens; and that thin layer is protecting the paint.

Now, bird flies over, drops a masive 💩 on your car, the coating takes the damage, not the clearcoat.

Just a few questions left and you will be able to make an informed decision on Ceramic Coatings: Where to get it? Who is it for? Can you DIY? How much it costs? Is it better than regular wax? Should I get it?

CERAMIC COATINGS - Part 3

What does it do?

It is a paint protection so the obvious answer is: It protects your cars paint.
But what does it protect against?
Protects against, bird lime, tree sap, offers UV protection, also protects against chemicals and oils found on the reads, more so on a rainy day.

But remember! It doesn’t protect agains scratches. Well it does, but its effectiveness against scratches is minimal, don’t think you’ll scrape your bumper against the wall and somehow the coating will magically protect the bumper, definitely not the case, it will protect from the micro-scratches inflicted by a clean plush microfibre cloth during the drying process, but that’s about it. Remember, it’s just a very-very thin layer of hardened polymer.

Very, very effective against bug splatter, and those “radioactive” bird p**ps that left on the car for long periods of time, will permanently etch in the paint.
I saw a test being done on a car panel: a big nasty, disgusting 🤮 bird p**p was left for 9 days on the car. On the 9th day, it was cleaned, obviously it left behind a big ugly mark.
Because the car had a ceramic coating installed, the etching was inflicted to the coating and not the cars paint. It still needed machine polish and local reapplication of the coating, but definitely cheaper to fix than a permanent damage to the clear coat. Yes, you can polish the clearcoat too, however, sometimes it has its limitations, if the clearcoat started to crack, then no amount of polishing can fix that, and even if you catch it sooner, the less machine polishing the car gets the better.

Bug splatter? The aftermath of a more … spirited drive during the summer is a lot of bugs splattered on the front bumpers, mirrors, bonnet and roof, left for a few days those will etch in the paint, and the machine polisher will have to be deployed, which will result in extra cost.

Tree sap? 10 times easier to clean off of a ceramic coating protected car. Tree sap eft for too long it will also etch in the cars paint.

UV protection? Protects against that too, which translates too less oxidation of the clearcoat, and that ultimately results in shinier car for longer.

Oils and other nasty stuff like tar found on the roads? Yes, it protects against that too.
In many cases the tar comes off during the contact wash or even the pre-wash stage.

Simple answer to “what does it do?” is: the ceramic coating protects your paint better and longer than other products or traditional waxes.

We still need to answer: How does it work? Where to get it? Who is it for? Can you DIY? How much it costs? Is it better than regular wax? Should I get it?

CERAMIC COATINGS - Part 2

What is it?

Some think it’s liquid magic in a glass bottle that bonds to the cars paint, but in reality it’s just a protection for your car; probably the most effective paint protection, other than a PPF (Paint Protection Film, which is some sort of wrap, but instead of covering the entire car, it is applied mainly in the areas most vulnerable to stone chips, even though lately I’ve seen companies applying it on the entire car, which makes it more of a wrap and not a PPF, but anyway, back to the ceramic coating.

In science language: It’s a SiO₂ (silicon dioxide-based polymer) paint protection for your car. The formula might differentiate from one manufacturer to another, but SiO₂ is the base in all of them.

We still need to answer: What does it do? How does it work? Where to get it? Who is it for? Can you DIY? How much it costs? Is it better than regular wax? Should I get it?

I cleaned a lot of XC90s, but only now I’ve noticed that the lid of the armrest for the 3rd row of seats has a spider and a spider web on it. How cool is that?
