Reminder that “I’ll just go if there’s a gap” only works if you’ve also checked what’s directly in front of you.

Waiting to turn into the junction, learner did the right thing and held back after deciding the gap wasn’t actually there.

Car behind didn’t quite share the same level of awareness and rolled into the back at very low speed while only looking for an opportunity ahead.

No drama, just a good example of why you don’t commit on hope alone.

Note: When emerging or following traffic, always make sure the space ahead is actually clear and moving, not just available. If anything feels uncertain, wait for the full picture before moving.

Parents of learner drivers deserve more credit.

Imagine willingly sitting in the passenger seat while your child approaches a roundabout at an interesting speed and says:

“So what lane do I need?”

With approximately 3 seconds remaining.

Another pass! I’m running out of ways to stand awkwardly in photos, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Note: Sat navs are helpful, but don’t wait for them to shout “TURN NOW!” before starting your observations. Look ahead, spot junctions early, and get your mirrors, signals and positioning sorted before the sat nav starts panicking.

People often ask how I maintain such high standards as a driving instructor.

The answer is simple: rigorous training, continuous professional development, and regular performance reviews from my supervisor.

As you can see, he takes his role very seriously.

Unfortunately, today’s review highlighted concerns around treat distribution and walk frequency.

I’ll be working on these areas immediately.

🚨 Public Service Announcement 🚨

If you miss your turning, just miss your turning.

Don’t swerve.
Don’t panic.
Don’t perform an interpretive dance with the steering wheel.

The sat nav will literally reroute you.

The road is full of people who’d rather add 5 minutes to their journey than 5 years to their insurance premium.

I would love to hear though: what’s the worst wrong turn you’ve ever taken?

In my early days, mine was that I looped the M6 near Birmingham 4 times (each loop was 10 minutes!!)

Massive congratulations! Fully deserved and a pleasure to teach. Go enjoy the freedom, but remember us little people when you’re too important to answer messages because you’re out driving everywhere.

Note: When you’re approaching a junction and it feels like “it’ll probably be fine”, that is exactly the moment it will not be fine. Slow down early, observe properly, and don’t outsource decision making to hope.
