Green light… but would you keep going? 🚦
A real situation from a driving lesson today.
Our light was green, but pedestrians began crossing in front of us. My learner spotted what was developing and responded to the hazard — while drivers behind decided to sound their horns.
The important lesson? Drive what is happening in front of you, not according to the pressure coming from behind you.
Traffic lights tell you when you may proceed, but you still need to make sure it is safe to do so.
How would you have dealt with this?

🎉 FIRST-TIME AUTOMATIC PASS FOR LOUISE! 🎉

A massive, heartfelt congratulations to Louise from Loughborough, who passed her Automatic Driving Test FIRST TIME today (28th September) at Melton Mowbray Test Centre with her instructor, Simon Harrison! 🏆🚙💨

The last few weeks haven’t been easy for Louise—she was feeling very nervous about taking the test and really struggled with self-doubt. But through sheer perseverance, hard work, and a little extra mindset support (including reading my book, Behind the Mind of a Driving Examiner, to help remove those test-day fears and take the edge off), she turned it all around! 📚✨

When the examiner gave her the news, Louise couldn't even believe she had passed and blurted it out right there in the car!

Louise, we are endlessly proud of you. You proved to yourself today that you CAN do it, and your determination to not give up paid off in the best possible way. Enjoy every single moment of your new-found driving freedom!

🚗🧠 A brilliant evening talking neurodiversity, SEND and driver training with Leicester ADIs!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to deliver my Understanding Neurodiverse Learners presentation to around 30 driving instructors from Leicester ADIs.

It was actually the first time I’ve delivered this particular presentation to a group — and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

What made the evening particularly worthwhile was the level of engagement. There were lots of questions, discussion and instructors sharing their own experiences of supporting autistic, ADHD and SEND learners.

I also received this lovely message afterwards:

«“Hi Simon, just wanted to say thank you coming down yesterday and doing the presentation for us.

I’ve received positive feedback from the members and I thought you did a brilliant job considering you said you’ve not done one before.

Thank you once again and also thank you for the books. I’ve now got some bedtime reading now! 👍🏻”»

Thank you! It was great to hear that the members found it useful. 😊

For me, the biggest message from the evening was simple:

See the learner, not the diagnosis.
Adapt the teaching, not the standard.
Build independence, not dependence.

Neurodiversity doesn't mean lowering the standard required to become a safe driver. It means understanding that different learners may need different routes to reach that standard.

📖 I've written more about the Leicester session in my latest 4front Driving School blog.

🎓 Want to run this CPD with your own group?

My complete Understanding Autism & SEND: ADI CPD Training Package is available to purchase and includes the presentation, instructor guide, speaker script and CPD certificate.

Alternatively, I can come and deliver the presentation for you.

If you're part of an ADI association, local instructor group, driving school or organisation and would like me to deliver a session on Understanding Neurodiverse Learners, please get in touch.

A massive thank you to Leicester ADIs for inviting me and to everyone who came along and contributed to the evening.

Hopefully the first presentation of many! 🚗🧠
