Check out this video for a few examples of dealing with pedestrians at junctions. There is no hard and fast formula to follow. As with most aspects of driving, you need to exercise judgement based on what is going on around you at the time.

What's all the fuss about the changes to the Highway Code? Take a look at my blog post for some clarity - it's linked in the comments.
If you're a full licence holder and you've been applying the rules of the Official Highway Code to your driving up until now, then the small changes that came into force on 29th January will require very little adjustment to your attitude or actions. If you think the changes will lead to confusion, carnage at junctions and pedestrians randomly stepping out in front of traffic, then you may be misunderstanding how to apply the rules of the Highway Code to your driving.
The changes don't mean that you should suddenly stop for a pedestrian on the pavement with an articulated lorry about to drive up your exhaust pipe. And NO! you will not be fined for using the wrong hand to open your car door.
