I have been taking my BMW to GMC for 4 years now. It is a totally different experience to going to the BMW dealership. It is a much better experience.
Whenever I would go to the BMW dealership it felt as if they were trying to pull my pants down and take me for a ride. I would take the car in for one thing and then they would tell me it had to stay longer and then it needed something else doing. I am not a petrol head but I do have a sentimental feeling for every car I have ever owned. With the BMW dealership it felt like my dear automobile was being violated each time I took him to see them: literally pumped for cash.
GMC feels more like a family run business where they really care about the car. They are very clear about what they are going to do and when they can do it, and they get it done. They have an encyclopedic knowledge of German motors: an information asymmetry, which could breed a certain arrogance. And yet, unlike the BMW dealership, who probably don’t know or care half as much about the cars they sell, GMC share their knowledge with grace and kindness. GMC don’t treat the customer like a fool.
The best example of this was when I took the BMW for a standard service (pre-paid for when I bought the car) to the BMW dealership and they said one of my tyres had a nail in it. They claimed all the tyres needed to be replaced to calibrate accurately with the new tyre.
I was confused as the clever car, which they had sold me, had not flagged this on the system. I told them I would take the car to my local garage to check it over. I went to GMC and they explained that the nail had not penetrated the tyre. They removed the superficial butt which the BMW dealership had filmed with great triumph.
GMC said the nail butt was entirely superficial and I could keep driving for the foreseeable with no issues.
