“Just a quick engine service…” they said 😅
Meanwhile… full strip-down, crank out, pistons out, timing assembly apart, head completely rebuilt and every clearance checked by hand.

This one might have been saved earlier with better oil quality and shorter oil change intervals.
Poor lubrication and extended servicing intervals can quietly turn into a very expensive lesson.

Engine overhauls are precision work — not just replacing parts, but measuring, inspecting, machining and rebuilding everything back to factory tolerances. 🔧⚙️

Back together properly soon.

Head gasket failure.
One mistake many people make is leaving the engine sitting before repair.

When the head gasket fails, coolant and water can enter the engine internally — reaching cylinders, piston rings, bearings, and other critical components.

Even over a short period of time, corrosion starts, oil becomes contaminated, and internal engine damage develops rapidly.

What could have been a relatively simple repair can quickly turn into a complete engine replacement.

This customer went from a repairable head gasket job… to needing an entire engine.

If you suspect head gasket failure:

* Stop driving immediately
* Do not keep topping up coolant and continuing to use the vehicle
* Get the engine inspected as soon as possible

Early diagnosis saves engines — and saves money.

This is what poor oil quality does to a modern engine.

This Jaguar Land Rover unit arrived with:
– High oil consumption
– Poor starting
– Gradual performance loss

At just 88,000 miles, the internal damage was already severe.Inspection revealed classic lubrication breakdown:
• Piston skirt scoring and heat damage
• Oil control failure → excessive consumption
• Bearing wear on crankshaft journals
• Carbon contamination throughout the system

This isn’t a design issue.
This is oil failing to do its job.

Timing chains on BMW 3 Series 1.8 turbo — all 3 replaced.
Gearbox out, sump off.

Lengthy job, but fascinating to see inside — a lot going on in there.

Rattle at 2200rpm was the warning.
Customer acted early — perfect timing.

🚗 Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – Why Maintenance Matters

The DPF plays a critical role in reducing harmful emissions by capturing soot particles from your vehicle’s exhaust system. Over time, this filter can become blocked, leading to reduced performance, increased fuel consumption, and potential engine damage.

At Portmill Engineering, we carry out full DPF diagnostics, including:
✔️ Fault code analysis
✔️ Differential pressure testing
✔️ Temperature sensor checks
✔️ Regeneration assessment

⚠️ Important: Removing or “cutting out” a DPF is not only harmful to your vehicle and the environment — it is also illegal under UK regulations and will result in MOT failure.

Proper maintenance and timely diagnostics can prevent costly repairs and keep your vehicle compliant and efficient.

📞 Contact us today to book a DPF inspection and keep your vehicle running as it should.

DSG / VAG dual-clutch gearboxes are impressive pieces of engineering — fast, precise, and efficient. But they are also very sensitive to maintenance.

This vehicle came to us with classic DSG symptoms:
• Missing gears
• Intermittent reverse engagement

Before touching anything, the first step is always proper testing and diagnostics. These gearboxes require careful electronic and mechanical assessment to determine whether the fault lies in the clutch system, hydraulics, or the mechatronic control unit.

After testing confirmed the issue, the repair involved:
• Complete overhaul of the mechatronic unit
• New dual clutch pack installation
• Internal gearbox inspection

Many DSG failures happen because service intervals are ignored. These units require fluid servicing and, over time, clutch packs wear just like any friction component.

When early warning signs appear — missed gears, delayed engagement, or reverse problems — ignoring them can quickly escalate into far more expensive repairs or complete gearbox replacement.

Early diagnosis and proper maintenance can make the difference between a controlled repair and a major failure.

Peugeot 308 arrived at the workshop with a simple complaint: battery not charging.

At first glance the reason looked obvious — the auxiliary belt was missing.
Problem solved? Not quite.

When something like this happens, the real question is always: why did it happen?

So the diagnostics began.

Every component on the auxiliary drive had to be tested:
• Alternator
• Tensioner
• Auxiliary pulleys

Everything was checked for rotation, resistance and alignment.

Then the culprit revealed itself.

The A/C compressor had seized.
When it locked up, the auxiliary belt had no chance — it was thrown straight off the system. No belt meant the alternator stopped charging the battery.

Another reminder that in vehicle diagnostics the visible fault is often just the symptom — not the cause.

Proper diagnosis means asking the extra question.

Why?

Removing a stuck diesel injector can be extremely difficult and time-consuming. Carbon build-up and corrosion often lock the injector into the cylinder head.

Using a pneumatic extraction tool allows us to apply controlled force and avoid hours of manual struggle. With the right equipment, the job can be done faster, cleaner, and with much lower risk of damage.

In this type of work, time, precision, and cleanliness are critical.
