The Met Office says the strengthening El Niño could increase the likelihood of wetter and windier conditions across the UK, particularly later in autumn and into early winter.

With the weather becoming more changeable, now is a good time to check your buildings and make sure they’re ready for stronger winds and wet conditions.

Silostop Secure Windbreaks can help protect livestock and building areas from wind and rain, while still allowing you to control airflow and ventilation. They also help reduce cold draughts, protect open-sided areas and give you more control over airflow within the building.

World Mental Health Day 🧡

Farming can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with its challenges. From long hours and unpredictable weather to the pressures of running a business, it's easy for farmers to put their own wellbeing last.

This World Mental Health Day, we're reminding our farming community that looking after your mental health is just as important as looking after your farm. 🧡

At Silostop, we're proud to collaborate with The Farming Community Network (FCN), an organisation dedicated to supporting farmers and farming families through difficult times.

Whether it's checking in on a neighbour, having a conversation over a cup of tea, or reaching out for support, even the smallest gestures can make a big difference.

🌱 Because behind every successful farm is a person who deserves support, too.

If you or someone you know needs a listening ear, FCN is here to help.

Are invisible losses stealing your corn silage’s feed value?
Dry matter shrink can happen at every stage—from filling and fermentation to sealed storage and feed-out. The main culprit? Oxygen exposure. When air gets in, microorganisms turn your high-value sugars into carbon dioxide, water, and heat.
💡 Pro-Tip: Don’t wait for visible mold to fix the problem. Track your dry matter ensiled vs. dry matter fed, check face temperatures regularly, and make sure your top sheet and wall films are sealed tight.

A big congratulations to our Jeremy Perkins on his results in this year’s Galloway On-Farm Herd of the Year Competition!

In the Rest of England region, Jeremy’s herd came 2nd in the Small Herd category, 2nd for Cow & Calf, Small Herd, and took 1st place for Best Bull, Small Herd.

A brilliant achievement - well done, Jeremy! 👏

Silostop Orange may be lightweight, but it certainly isn’t weak. 💪

This flexible, high oxygen barrier film drapes closely over the silage surface, helping to eliminate air pockets and create an effective seal.

The result? Reduced dry matter losses, less surface waste and improved aerobic stability at feedout.

Lightweight, strong and designed to protect your valuable forage. 🌱

What a week at World Dairy Expo! 🐄🇺🇸

Our team had a fantastic time in Madison, Wisconsin, catching up with friends from across the dairy industry and watching some exceptional show cows step into the spotlight.

Tim was joined by our distributor CP Feeds, and also had the pleasure of meeting Bill Hageman, President of the World Dairy Expo Board of Directors, while presenting our sponsored corn silage award.

There was plenty of excitement in the showring too including the moment the judges selected their top three cows, with a celebratory high five letting exhibitors know they had made the cut! ✋🏆

Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us and helped make another World Dairy Expo one to remember.

We may be a day late, but we couldn’t let World Animal Day pass without introducing you to some very special members of the extended Silostop family! 🐄🐓🐾

Meet Jeremy, one of our colleagues and a dedicated conservation grazier. He works with wildlife trusts and private landowners, using extensive, low-level grazing to support wildlife habitats and help increase wading bird populations along the East Suffolk coast.

Jeremy keeps several Galloway breeds, including the incredibly rare Riggit Galloway. With fewer than 250 remaining worldwide, his herd of 11 breeding females forms part of his own livestock conservation project, helping to restore a distinctive colour marking that was bred out more than 200 years ago.

When he isn’t caring for his cattle, Jeremy is kept company by his Welsummer chickens, producers of fabulous terracotta-coloured eggs and Ruff, his trusty Border Collie. We’re sure Ruff keeps everyone in line! 🐶

A brilliant example of how caring for livestock and protecting nature can go hand in hand. 🌿

Storage inspections aren’t just cosmetic—they’re your best defense against invisible feed loss!
Weather, wildlife, and machinery can compromise your cover long after harvest ends. Assign a team member to run through this quick inspection checklist:
- Check the full top surface after high winds or heavy storms.
- nspect wall junctions and shoulders where air channels easily form.
- Keep machinery routes clear of the storage area to prevent snagging.
- Keep a dedicated repair kit with patch tape and spare gravel bags nearby.
- Log all repairs to spot recurring problem areas before next harvest.
Preventing air ingress during storage protects the tonnage and feed value you worked so hard to harvest.
