πŸš— Turning into a new road? Don’t just look at the turn β€” look at the road you’re turning into!

When your examiner asks you to take the next road on the right or left, there are 3 important things to check before you commit to the turn:

πŸ”΄ 1. What’s the speed limit?
Has the speed limit changed, or is it staying the same? A new road can have a different speed limit, and missing the sign could lead to you driving too fast, too slowly, or showing hesitation and poor progress.

πŸ”΅ 2. What type of road is it?
Is it a one-way street? If it is, you need to understand where you should position your vehicle for the direction you’re going. Missing the one-way signs can lead to incorrect positioning β€” something that could cost you valuable marks on your driving test.

🟒 3. Are you actually allowed to turn?
Don’t automatically assume you can turn just because your examiner has given you a direction. Look for No Right Turn, No Left Turn or time-restricted signs. Some restrictions apply only at certain times, particularly around school-run periods. Always check the sign and any supplementary plate before turning.

βœ… A few seconds of checking can prevent an avoidable driving test fault.

These aren’t the only observations you need to make when turning into a new road, but they are three key checks that can help you avoid common mistakes and drive with greater confidence.

πŸš— DRIVING TIP OF THE DAY – MEETING ONCOMING TRAFFIC πŸš—

When meeting oncoming traffic on a narrow road, good observation and planning are key.

πŸ‘€ Look well ahead – spotting oncoming vehicles early gives you more time to plan.

πŸ…ΏοΈ Check for parked cars and obstructions – look at which side of the road they are on and decide who needs to give way.

🐒 Slow down early – don’t wait until you’re too close to make a decision.

↔️ Give enough space – be prepared to stop and allow the other vehicle to pass safely when necessary.

βœ… Remember: Being β€œright” isn’t as important as keeping everyone safe. Good anticipation, patience and courtesy make you a safer driver.

πŸš— BEFORE YOU MOVE OFF – 4 THINGS TO CHECK

Moving off safely is one of the first skills every learner driver needs to master β€” and it’s something you should continue doing every time you move away from the kerb.

Before moving off, remember:

πŸ‘€ 1. MIRRORS – Check all your mirrors and know what’s happening around you.

πŸ”Ž 2. BLIND SPOT – Look over your shoulder and check for anything you may not have seen in your mirrors.

➑️ 3. SIGNAL – IF NEEDED – Let other road users know what you intend to do.

βœ… 4. SAFE TO GO? – Check again before moving. Make sure the road is clear and it’s safe to proceed.

DON’T JUST LOOK – MAKE SURE IT’S SAFE.

Good observation and effective mirror checks are essential skills for safe driving and for preparing for your UK driving test.

If you’re learning to drive in Chingford, Highams Park, Loughton, Woodford, Walthamstow or surrounding areas, Pro Drivers Academy can help you build safe, confident driving habits from the start.

πŸš— TURNING INTO A NEW ROAD? THINK 3 THINGS!

When you’re approaching a junction and preparing to turn into a new road, there’s a lot to take in. You should always be making full observations β€” checking for approaching vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, obstructions, road markings, traffic lights and any other signs or hazards that could affect your decision.

But to help you prepare for the turn, try to make these three key checks part of your routine:

1️⃣ CAN YOU TURN INTO THE ROAD?
Before turning, check whether you are actually allowed to enter. Look for No Entry, No Right Turn, No Left Turn or other restrictions. Also watch for time restrictions, as some turning restrictions only apply at certain times.

2️⃣ WHAT TYPE OF ROAD ARE YOU TURNING INTO?
Is it a one-way road, two-way road, dead-end road or another type of road? Knowing this helps you decide how to position your vehicle, what to expect further ahead and whether you may need to plan for turning around if it’s a dead end.

3️⃣ WHAT IS THE SPEED LIMIT?
Don’t assume the speed limit stays the same. It could change from 20 mph to 30 mph, or vice versa, as you enter the new road. Look for speed-limit signs and road features that help you identify the correct limit.

πŸ’‘ These are not the ONLY things you should observe. They are three key things to prioritise while you continue making full, effective observations around you.

The great thing is that these three pieces of information are often close to the junction or entrance to the road, so identifying them early can help you prepare your position, speed and approach before you actually make the turn.

Think ahead. Read the road. Make safe decisions. 🚘
