First Time Pass - Zero Faults
Well done to Josh from Twickenham who smashed his test in his own car, and with zero faults! In Isleworth, that is one big achievement.

Fake Reviews
Today I received a repeat email from someone offering, again, to sell me fake reviews.

I've blurred their details for obvious reasons, but it does cast a very dark shadow over the whole review system.

In 16 years of business, across Facebook and Google I've had about 100 reviews. Not many for 16 years, but each and every one is genuine and verifiable.

As with any business, you take on a client, you get paid for doing the work and most of the time it ends with a "thanks" and a handshake for a job (hopefully) well done. That's all I hope for, a happy client.

If someone is kind enough to go the extra mile and leave a review, it's always appreciated.

What I will never do, however, is pay someone, who in turn pays other people, to post fake reviews on my Socials. It mis represents a business and decieves the public.

How can deceiving the public with fake reviews be good on any level?

How, on earth, can someone I've never met and never worked for post a "genuine review?"

I'm old school and believe in doing things properly and with integrity.

Maybe, though, this is how business is conducted these days? Sound bites, poor quality promotional videos and fake reviews.

Personally, I'd rather people call me through recommendation or because they have read my genuine, verifiable reviews.

And people wonder why the service they receive bears no resemblance to those promotional videos and hundreds of 5 star reviews?

When you invest your time, trust and money in someone, integrity is everything.

Following his first time pass today at Isleworth Test Centre, Tanzif has kindly popped a 5* review on Google.

"Darren is great instructor and an even better person. Gave me the confidence I needed to pass my driving test today.

The lessons were always something to look forward to. Darren doesn't rush you into learning new things but takes you step by step so that you are confident in what you are learning and ready for the next topic.

As a person with low confidence it was great to have an instructor that was calm and patient with my driving learning. Darren had no issue with explaining things over and over which helped me learn better.

I also enjoyed chatting in lesson about anything which made the lesson even more fun. NO lesson felt like a waste, either improving my driving or learning new skills. So I would HIGHLY recommend to learn to drive from Darren Filby.

Once again THANK YOU Darren for your lessons."

First Time Pass
Well done to my young friend Tanzif who passed at the first attempt at his test at Isleworth this morning.

A cold and very wet day didn't put Tanzif off his game, and he passed his test with flying colours.

Now, a 2 hour one way journey to work on multiple buses will be reduced to a comfortable 45 minute drive in his own car.

That's why I love this job.

End of year

I'm done now for a couple of weeks and thought I'd share how my year has gone.

First time pass rate: 85.4%
Average training hours: 48

Interestingly, only one person took their test in my car this year. Everyone else chose to use their own, or a family vehicle.

This seems to be a growing trend, but the important thing is the result.

Thanks to everyone who picked up the phone and called me, whether it was for advice only or to chat about lessons.

The situation regarding test booking remains pretty dire. It is still a 6 month wait in many places. There are, however, plans afoot "sometime in the Spring" to have a go at sorting things out.

Perhaps the long overdue change in leadership at the DVSA will actually see some tangible improvements. When you've hit rock bottom, the only way is up (fingers crossed).

My Google and Facebook ratings remain 5 star, which is great.

Lastly, seasons greetings to everyone, and all the best for 2026.

Driving Tests - It gets worse

I think we're all aware of the existence of test re-sellers. Techy people with clever software that hoover up tests at 6am every Monday, to then be sold on later at vast profits.

That's old news and nothing the authorities have done has improved matters.

Now, and more alarmingly, it appears that some driving instructors are involved in assisting the re-sellers.

How does it work? It's very simple really.

Many instructors have signed themselves up to be able to book tests on their pupils behalf. It's called the OBS - Online Booking Service.

The scam is quite simple. Crooked driving instructors give their OBS log in details to the re-sellers in return for a monthly fee, which appears to be between £100 and £250.

Once in possession of licence details, provided by people enquiring about test availability, together with instructors logon details, they then have all the tools they need to crack on and fill their bank account.

This murky industry has mushroomed out of the mess created in the wake of the Pandemic.

The government department in charge says they have been doing lots to stamp it out, but, personally, all I can see are things getting worse, not better.

To be a driving instructor, anyone applying must be classified as a "fit and proper person". Criminal record, excessive points on licence etc.

It is very clear, though, that if there are driving instructors taking kick backs from re-sellers, they most certainly are not "fit and proper", but they are out there nonetheless.

There may, however, be a tiny glimmer of hope in a couple of months.

The system is changing in the Spring so that only learners can book their own tests.

Will that help? In theory it should, but only time will tell. These scammers have found a way to keep their business ticking along so far, and this is in spite of the best efforts of the industry's governing body.

So I'm pretty sure they will be looking at ways now to tweek their business model to keep the cash rolling in. Time will tell.

I don't have an OBS logon. I have never booked tests on pupils behalf and I intend to keep it that way.

Until the Spring, those instructors who have sold their self respect to the re-sellers, they will continue to profit from this appalling trade in (mostly young) people's misery.

Make no mistake, there are plenty of superb instructors out there, running good businesses and providing an excellent service to their clients.

Sadly, though, there are clearly individuals out there who care less about their clients and more about lining their pockets.

I hope the BBC keep digging to expose the full extent of this problem.

Maybe once the governing authorities are embarrassed with the potential extent of instructor involvement, people they allow onto the Register of Driving Instructors remember, maybe then somebody may actually feel enough heat to spur them into doing something.

Thankfully I'm semi-retired now. I continue to do the job a couple of days a week, however, because I love it, not because I have to do it. If things continue to deteriorate, though, that may change.

There are plenty of things I can occupy my time with that are far less stressful than this industry, as it has been, and is now. Very sad, but the thrill of helping people get their licence keeps me going - for the time being, anyway.

Having spoken to other local instructors, others are thinking along the same lines.

There comes a point where you are using up so much physical and mental energy fighting a broken system, that the fight no longer seems worth the cost to mind and body.

Let's see how this plays out shall we? Well done to the BBC for embarrassing a few bad guys.

Fingers crossed, at the very least, HMRC will take an active interest in their finances and deliver Karma through heavy fines and sentences.

This open trade in scamming good people has gone on too long, and the bad guys need sorting once and for all.

If you want proof just how bad it is for learners trying to book a driving test, I just pulled this off an instructor forum.

What concerns me as much is the shocking state of some cars that people are trying to use for their test.

These are usually badly maintained private vehicles. Instructors cars have to meet strict standards before they enter a test centre carpark.

Eye opening stuff.
