Modern Edge: Victorian Terrace Extension & Loft Conversion, Penge

A bold wrap-around extension transforming the ground floor of this South London home designed by the Model Projects team.
The staggered rear and pitched roof allow full-height glazing to rise to the apex, while a full-length glazed roof along the side return floods the interior with daylight.
Inside, the journey moves from a traditionally proportioned front snug through pocket doors into a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, anchored by a contemporary staircase set against feature brickwork and lit from above by a large flat rooflight.

A carefully considered loft conversion in Penge, South London.
This project required full planning permission due to the scale of works and a 300mm ridge raise essential for comfortable internal head height.
The rear dormer is clad in vertical metal, giving the addition a crisp, contemporary character while clearly distinguishing old from new.
Inside, clever use of pocket doors maximises space, while rooflights flood the ensuite, tucked into the front roof slope, with natural light.

Planning permission has been approved for this stunning home in Esher, set on a generous plot with a beautiful garden.

The proposal makes the most of the site with front, side, and rear extensions, as well as clever use of roof space. New windows and doors with black metal frames provide a striking contrast against the existing brickwork.

Inside, the layout has been reimagined to suit modern living, featuring an open-plan kitchen, dining, and family space that opens out to the garden. A new master suite with vaulted ceilings and a dramatic entrance hallway that opens up to the roof completes the design, creating a home that is both functional and full of character.

With planning now secured, we’re excited to move this project forward to site.

A strong start to 2026 as this Esher home moves beyond planning and prepares for site.

Planning permission was approved at the end of last year for this comprehensive extension and renovation to a home set on a generous plot within walking distance of Esher, featuring a stunning garden.

The proposal maximises the site’s potential through front, side and rear extensions, alongside the intelligent use of roof space. Externally, new windows and doors with black metal frames create a crisp contrast against the existing brickwork.

Internally, the layout has been carefully reconfigured to suit modern living, centred around an open-plan kitchen, dining and family space that fully embraces views to the garden. The design also introduces a new master suite with vaulted ceilings and a striking entrance hallway that opens up to the roof, creating a dramatic sense of arrival.

A standout moment in this Art Deco inspired extension is the sweeping curved window, a deliberate gesture by the team at Model Projects to soften the strong geometry of the architecture while drawing daylight deep into the heart of the home.

Developed through a careful study of proportion, symmetry and period detail, the design balances bold lines with elegant restraint. The curve not only enhances the spatial experience but also creates a subtle dialogue between old and new, allowing the extension to feel both confident and respectful.

A gentle reminder that strong architectural ideas don’t need to shout when thoughtfully designed, they can be calm, refined and timeless. A considered addition to this 1920s home in Richmond, South London.

This period townhouse has been thoughtfully modernised while celebrating its original character. From restored cornicing and sash windows to a light-filled rear extension with Crittall-style doors and a dramatic roof lantern, every detail was designed to enhance flow, light, and family living.
