Did you know that Pontyberem used to be at the heart of one of South Wales’ most important coal mining areas? ⛏️ The pits may be gone now, but the history shaped our village — from the community spirit to the stunning landscapes left behind.

And here’s a quirky local nugget: the old Pontyberem pit whistle used to signal the start and end of shifts — and you could hear it from miles around! Some say if you listen carefully on a quiet evening, you can almost hear echoes of that time. 🕰️

🎆 Happy Guy Fawkes Night! 🎇

Most people know the fireworks and bonfires, but did you know the first Guy Fawkes masks weren’t masks at all? People actually wore effigies of Guy Fawkes on their heads back in the 1600s!
In some towns, they even burned strawmen of unpopular neighbours or public figures — basically a 17th-century roast… with fire! 🔥

And here’s a fun fact: the word “guy” comes from Guy Fawkes himself! Originally, it referred to someone dressed in an outrageous or funny way. So next time you say “funny guy,” you’re tipping your hat to history. 🎩
