1958: How MG sold the MGA

This isn't just a pretty picture of an MGA. It's a snapshot of how British sports cars were marketed in the late 1950s.

This 1958 Autocar advert shows what MG thought mattered most: style, performance and international appeal.

Rather than focusing on technical specifications, MG led with the promise of a modern sports car lifestyle, calling the MGA "The sports car all the world loves to drive!"

Nearly 70 years later, it's easy to see why the MGA made such an impression.

MGA owners were spoilt for choice 🎨

This original factory colour chart shows the shades available across the MGA range, from Mineral Blue and Orient Red to Iris Blue, Ash Green and Alamo Beige.

Looking at it today, it's striking just how many bold colours were available compared to many modern cars.

At Moss Rimmer, we love uncovering pieces of history like this.

Which original MGA colour would be your choice?

Before the TR5 introduced six-cylinder power, the TR4A refined the formula that made Triumph's sports cars so popular.

At first glance, it looks much like the TR4. But underneath, one of the biggest changes was something you couldn't always see.

The TR4A introduced independent rear suspension (IRS) on most models, giving the car improved ride comfort and handling while retaining the character that enthusiasts loved. Some markets also received live axle versions, making it one of the more interesting cars in the TR range.

It also marked the final evolution of Triumph's four-cylinder TR before the move to the six-cylinder TR5 and, later, the TR6.

That's worth remembering when sourcing parts. While the TR4A shares plenty with the TR4, the suspension, chassis, and some drivetrain components can differ depending on whether you have an IRS or a live-axle car.

A key chapter in the TR story, and one that perfectly bridges the gap between the early four-cylinder cars and the later six-cylinder generation.

HIGH PERFORMANCE FOR YOUR ENGINE BAY

Tight engine bay? Modified exhaust? Steering column or chassis rails getting in the way?
Powerlite's compact starter motors are designed to deliver serious starting power without taking up unnecessary space.

The MicroStart weighs from just 2.3kg, while the Slimline is designed for installations where every millimetre counts. Both use high-torque technology to give you the performance you need in a compact package.

Ideal for modified classics, performance builds and those awkward engine bays where a standard starter simply won't fit.

Less space. No compromise on starting performance.

"Your Mother Wouldn't Like It."

Five words.
No explanation.
No justification.
Just a challenge.

In an era obsessed with freedom, MG understood something important: if your mother approved of it, you probably didn't want it.

Staff Picks | Casey – Digital Content Creator

Every fortnight, we'll be asking members of the Moss Rimmer team one simple question:
If you could own any classic, which one would you choose... and why?

"I'd pick a Triumph GT6 Mk3 in Mimosa Yellow.

The GT6 has always been one of those cars that catches my eye whenever I see one. I love the sleek fastback shape, the long bonnet with its distinctive bulge, and of course the characterful 2.0-litre straight-six engine. It has all the classic British sports car charm but with a bit more refinement and practicality than some of Triumph's other models.

At the car shows we attend, you'll often find me slowing right down past the GT6 line-up. They're one of the few cars that always make me stop for a second look, and I usually end up spending longer admiring them than I'd planned to. I think they're a bit of an underrated classic too. While Spitfires and TRs tend to get more attention, the GT6 offers something a little different, with its unique styling and six-cylinder character."

Two of our sales team. Two very different takes on classic Triumph ownership.
First up is Will C and his Triumph Herald 13/60 Estate, registered in 1971.

"I have owned the car for ten years. For most of this time it was fitted with a tuned 1300 engine making around 100hp, larger Vitesse brakes all round and a Spitfire 1500 limited-slip differential.

Earlier this year I decided to build and install a fast-road Vitesse-spec two-litre straight-six engine and GT6 gearbox.

The condition of the vehicle when I bought it was much the same as it is now, other than being completely standard. The first modifications were lowering the suspension and fitting more performance-oriented wheels and tyres.

The fact that it's an estate model already makes it rare. Converting it to Vitesse specification makes it even rarer, as Triumph never produced a Vitesse estate themselves, aside from around 20 examples built under licence by Park Royal.

In the last three months alone, it has covered almost 3,000 miles with trips across the UK, to the Isle of Wight, and even Spa Classic in Belgium, performing faultlessly throughout."

Meanwhile, Will J's Mk4 Triumph Spitfire is a very different story.

"I have a Mk4 Triumph Spitfire fitted with a Dolomite 1500 engine and a three-rail gearbox with J-type overdrive from an 1850 Dolomite.

It's largely standard, although it now runs a 45 DCOE Weber carburettor and 15-inch MGF wheels. The next jobs on the list are to fully Polybush the suspension, overhaul the brakes and finish installing the interior."

One's already covering serious miles on a six-cylinder Vitesse-spec build, the other's mid-project with a Dolomite-powered Spitfire and a parts list as long as your arm.

Different cars. Different approaches. Same Triumph obsession.
