Not the usual happy post of a learner passing. An unfortunate experience today for one of my learners in Lincoln with quite an angry driver behind travelling down monks road towards the City Centre. The full works of "the bird / two fingers / agressiv behavior" and so on. (to clarify, the learner was doing just fine and was making appropriate and safe progress for the situation)
However, his narrow-mindedness clearly doesn't understand the patience, training and effort that goes into teaching some learners. And likewise, the effort the learners have to put into learning to drive.
For some, jumping into a car and learning to drive it is no easy task at all. I've dealt with extremely anxious and nervous learners who have to battle with their own minds to even get into a car. It takes alot of effort to nurture and build that confidence for some. It is also very easily undone. Fortunately, this learner handled the situation brilliantly! (Again to clarify, this particular learner was ok, however it isn't the case for every learner)
I can deal with tailgaters and road users who pull out on us as we can use this as a learning example for the learner driver of how they should anticipate and deal with these situations (i'm not encouraging tailgating or road users pulling out just to help learners by the way - but we do try to get them anticipating for such things. Afterall, anyone can make a genuine mistake) . But Most negatives, we can make a positive out of, but some we are limited to what we can do! In this situation, all i could do was hope the learner didn't notice (The one time as an instructor i was hoping the learner forgot the rear view mirror checks :) - however, she didn't and did notice his behaviour)
Please, Please, remember, you where a learner once! Learner drivers are paying alot of money for tuition, and trust me, they aren't deliberately trying to get things wrong, or inconvenience you. All instructors are highly trained and audited regularly to ensure we meet the DVSA standard. We all do our best to ensure learners are only in the places that they are able to deal with. But from time to time, they may have a blip in dealing with something. This is called learning!
In terms of other drivers, most of us instructors will do our best to limit any inconvenience to other drivers. It is also uncomfortable for the learner as quite commonly, one of their biggest fears, is inconvenienceing you!!!!
I would however like to finish this post off on a positive and say Thank You to those that are patient and understanding when behind a learner!
