This customer was informed by a tyre garage that both track rod ends and steering rack needed replacing. After a closer look, it became evident that it wasn't the steering rack, but the inner tie rods that had excessive play, along with split dust covers, split CV boots, play in both lower ball joints, all of the lower arm bushes and Anti roll bar drop links.
There was also a significant "jolt" when on and off the throttle which was split rear engine stabiliser bushings, so these were also replaced.
The car is a 2004 Skoda Octavia with 155000 miles and was also due a timing belt replacement.
A lot of people would probably scrap this car at this point, however these old 1.9 TDI engines are notoriously bulletproof and reliable and so the customer decided to get the work done rather than buying another car with potentially somebody else's problems.
I am always happy to source parts online for a significant cost saving on jobs like this, especially for older cars like this one.
We managed to source a complete front suspension kit for about 1/3 of the price of what it would have cost from most local suppliers.
The CV joint kit came in at just £40 for both sides.
At prices like that there is no point in replacing just the boots.
New INA Timing belt and water pump also fitted, and both rear ABS wheel speed sensors to get that ABS light turned off.
Car is now ready to face it's next MOT.
