🚗 Clarity on new Graduated Driver Licensing rules 🚗
I recently asked the Infrastructure Minister for clarity on how the proposed Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme will affect people who already hold a provisional driving licence.
The Minister has confirmed that there will be a six-month transitional period once the scheme is introduced. Learner drivers who already hold a provisional licence before 1 October 2026, and who pass their practical test by 1 April 2027, will remain under the current restrictions, including the 45mph speed limit and the requirement to display amber plates for 12 months.
However, if a learner driver does not pass their test by 1 April 2027, they will instead fall under the new GDL rules.
It’s important that learners and families are aware of these dates so they understand how the new system may affect them.
