An apprentice fitted the clutch and flywheel on this one.

Not because we were short of technicians. Because he was ready for it.

Clutch replacement is one of the bigger jobs that comes through the workshop. Gearbox out, flywheel off, and then everything has to go back together correctly aligned. Alignment is the part that catches people out. Get it wrong and either the box will not mate up, or it will and the clutch pays for it a few thousand miles later.

Kyle worked out the right setup from the kit and used the alignment tool rather than eyeing it up and hoping. Done once, done properly.

A big thank you to T M Factors Ltd for dropping in with cakes for the team! 🍰🙌

Always appreciated, and they definitely won’t last long! 😋

Tim will be miffed that he wasn’t here, but that’ll teach him for swanning off on holiday.

Which system is causing the faults?

11/08/2026

Five fault codes doesn’t always mean five faults.

The Volvo we had in with an engine management light gave us five codes in the engine management system. Owen started with a global scan of the whole vehicle, not just the system with the light on, because underlying faults elsewhere have a habit of turning up in the story later.

Every code gets noted. Then the work begins, which is finding out which one is the cause and which ones are symptoms. One sensor reading out of range can pull several others out with it, and every one of those will log a code of its own.

That is the difference between reading codes and diagnosing a fault. If you replace parts off the back of a code list, you fix things that were never broken and the light comes back on.

Our diagnostic assessment is fixed price. Get booked in at https://www.oldfieldsgarage.co.uk/book/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=aug26-diagnostics&utm_content=fbli-five-fault-codes

Plenty of vehicles get turned away from a workshop for one reason. They don't fit.

Our four-post flatbed ramp is 6.5 metres.

That takes A-class and coachbuilt motorhomes, long-wheelbase panel conversions and small trucks. It means the underside gets inspected properly rather than assessed from the ground, and we can MOT small campers, motorhomes and goods vehicles up to 3000kg here on site.

For anyone running vans, that matters more than it sounds. The whole fleet goes to one garage whatever size it is, on schedules built around how the vehicles actually get used, with priority booking and the turnaround to match.

Book in and we'll take a proper look at what you're running: https://www.oldfieldsgarage.co.uk/book/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=aug26-fleet&utm_content=fbli-big-vehicles

An MOT is the same test in every garage in the country.

Same manual, same standards, same pass or fail.

What changes is the ten minutes afterwards. Whether you get a printout and a total, or a phone call telling you what matters now and what can wait.

People see awards on the wall and assume the routine stuff costs more. On the MOT it can't. The standard is set nationally and the fee is capped in law. If it fails, you get told what failed and what putting it right takes. Then you decide.

September is the busiest month of the testing year. Come in up to a month early and you keep the same renewal date, so there's nothing to lose by sorting it now.

This Volvo came in with one light on and nothing else wrong.

It got a full health check before anyone plugged in a diagnostic tool.

Every vehicle that is booked into our workshop gets one, regardless of whatever it came in for. And it’s how we know the rest of the car is safe to go back out on the road after the job is complete.

Sometimes it finds nothing, and you get told that. Sometimes it finds the tyre with three months left in it, or the pads that will not see the winter out. Either way you know where you stand before you get the keys back, and you decide what happens next.

Owen ran this one first. The fault came second.

A tyre that's fine in March can be a problem in June.

Heat softens rubber. Pressures rise. Small sidewall damage that was quiet in the cold starts to move. Long motorway runs, a boot full of luggage, and 28 degrees on the tarmac is a different job for a tyre than the school run.

Before you head off for the summer, five minutes with a £5 gauge in the main tread, a proper pressure check with the car cold, and a look for cracks or bulges is time well spent. If something looks off, bring it in.

A motorhome that hasn't turned a wheel since October isn't ready for France in July.

Nine months of standing does things to a vehicle. Tyres flat-spot. Brake discs corrode. Fluids sit. Seals dry out. The first proper trip of the year is exactly when you find out.

Our 6.5 metre four-post flatbed ramp takes A-class, coachbuilt and long-wheelbase motorhomes that most workshops can't safely lift. We service to the manufacturer schedule so your warranty stays intact, and check the parts that don't like sitting still.
