Good morning folks,

It’s 9am Thursday the 24th, the road closure signs have upped and gone, and the road is running freely.

Upto three days appears to have been upto three hours. Easy mistake to make, to be fair, and what is life, if not interspersed with a little bureaucratic violence that makes planning things tricky once in a while*.

*or like, every other month, forever, until the robots take over or AI crashes the moon into the earth trying to solve the argument about pineapple on pizza.

Both grades of fuel are now available at 3pm Wednesday. Thanks for bearing with us.

While we’re here, the government is changing the rate of duty on vapes, here’s a handy image explaining quite how they are stiffing you now there are more of you than to***co users.

Also, the road to Ludlow appears to be open again. No word if this is it, or if it’ll close tomorrow.

Fuel prices staying still as we enjoy the tidier market Monday Tuesday, market sentiment is still a tad erratic with big swings yesterday and again today.

***update, unleaded is back on as at 3pm***

Please don’t travel to us for unleaded, as we are unable to dispense any at the moment.

We hope to sort this out soon and will update when unleaded is back on.

Reminder that the road to Ludlow is due to close later on for “upto three days”.

Hola folks,

Unleaded rising two pence and diesel five pence. Prices are fairly rubbish, there’s no sugar coating it but it is the best we can do at the moment.

We would love the government to drop fuel duty as has been suggested by some politicians, but it’s worth noting that on pricing going to sites now, a ten pence reduction in duty today would only drop diesel back into the high 170s to low 180s, which is still terrible. Duty makes up 52 (usually 57) pence in every litre sold in the UK and VAT is even charged on top of that duty.

There’s further pressure on pricing looking ahead, with Saudi output to Europe being cut going into October. We’re more or less into October in oil terms already, so with the Iranians escalating things in Yemen and with the direct attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure we’re at something of go/no-go point for American decision makers.

Early voting for the US mid terms has begun already in some states and European refineries looking to replace Saudi oil will have a fairly negative impact on oil prices globally through the final weeks of the election campaign. So it’s either reach a settlement, put this conflict on ice, or try something new and imaginative, like killing people on a slightly bigger scale.

Bonza folks,

It’s just gone 2pm Sunday afternoon, we are trading above our usual volumes on unleaded - please do not travel to us for unleaded as an outage will occur soon.

We’re due for resupply of unleaded tomorrow morning. We’re very sorry for the trouble.

Stocks of diesel are good.

Update at 12pm: both grades now available. Thanks for bearing with us.

Update at 10am: our tanker is running later than scheduled and unleaded is not available. Resupply is due within the hour and unleaded should be available at all pumps by 12. We’re very sorry for the bother. Diesel is available.

Morning folks,

Our fuel resupply is due with us late morning - we’ve had to shut off unleaded on the bottom island, that’s pumps 3-4.

Unleaded remains available at 1-2, with diesel available at all pumps except 3 (due to hose damage).

We’ll update here when we’re back near to full service later on. We’re very sorry for the congestion on the forecourt being caused by the unleaded issue at the moment.

Oil dropped a little over 2% yesterday, which will be hitting site pricing today, but it was up around 4% prior, on top of the rises last week into this. We’ve seen our first pricing in a long while that would put us at over £2.00 a litre for diesel.

There is a long read on oil prices and why we’re all in a really expensive holding pattern, waiting for American decision makers to accept the reality on the ground; but it’s mostly written in capital letters at the moment.

We managed to dodge going over £2 a litre the last time the world had a wobble, and we’re going to give it another good go this time.

Bonza folks,

We’re running a little tight on unleaded out of one of our tanks - you can help us avoid running out of unleaded on one island by visiting tomorrow instead of this evening if you can.

Prices are staying still tomorrow, but will begin rising again into the weekend if we don’t see a change in the market.

As ever, unless you’re talking to Dave (small, chatty, quite chirpy most of the time) or Alex (not small, not chatty, perpetual grumpy look), you are not talking to someone who is responsible for pricing the fuel here at the citadel of rural retail.

Diesel up a penny and unleaded down a penny as we try and make sense of a market that is trying to turn us over and punch us in the face, but we’re quick and nimble, like a gazelle that has a very rudimentary understanding of capitalism.

Edit: we are priced at 162.9 unleaded and 186.9 diesel.

FUEL PRICE UPDATE:

Too long, didn’t read: everything is a bit more more expensive because violence and stuff.

Bonza folks,

Diesel has jumped a full 4 and a bit pence overnight as news filters through to markets that the Houthis; (they’re in Yemen and you wouldn’t invite them to lunch,) have seized a town on the coast of the Red Sea called Mocha. It’s a key town because it sits at sort of the northern mouth of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which is where the Red Sea narrows between Asia and Africa.

This is influencing the price of oil because it gives Iran the option to cause trouble for Saudi oil exports coming out via their petroline network which they’ve been using to avoid the Strait of Hormuz. This pipeline terminates on the Saudi coast of the Red Sea where it is loaded onto sea tankers for shipping north via the Suez, or into the Egyptian oil pipe network, or south onto Eastern Asia.

FUN LIL FACT. Bab al-Mandab means “gateway of anguish”, this is infinitely better named than the Strait of Hormuz, which is just after some ancient kingdom.

The Houthis are unlikely to fully block oil transiting south via Bab al-Mandab because it will mostly harm countries like Pakistan, India and China who Iran isn't looking to get into a row with. But the risk of instability and an increased risk that the Houthis may more easily target oil shipments from Saudi heading north was enough to power this latest bump in oil prices.

What does it mean for pricing here?
We're sitting pretty into the weekend because we've managed to dodge the jump today like the canny oil buying ninjas we try to be.

Oil is on something of a retreat today as the market begins to really dig into if the Houthis are capable of proper anarchy or maybe the rally yesterday was a bit hysterical. If the drop today is maintained into next week we're looking at 1-2 pence increase on both grades.

In line with our increasingly strict one-in-one-out for faults policy, pump 4 diesel is out of service with hose damage. Repair hoped for very shortly.
