We had this VW Transporter T6 in the workshop today with numerous faults, including:
P164B – Oil Pressure Switch Malfunction
The fault would return every time the vehicle was driven under load, causing both the engine management light and flashing glow plug light to appear.
Using ODIS Guided Fault Finding, we carried out the recommended signal and wiring tests. Following the factory test plan, ODIS concluded that the KX2 instrument cluster required replacement.
However, the test results didn't convince me that the instrument cluster was actually at fault.
Rather than simply replacing an expensive component based on the guided test plan, I carried out further independent diagnostic testing and managed to pinpoint the actual cause of the fault.
The correct faulty component was replaced and the vehicle was thoroughly tested under load — fault rectified!
More importantly, the customer saved over £700 compared with the cost of replacing the KX2 instrument cluster, which ultimately wasn't required.
This is exactly why proper diagnostics are so important. Manufacturer-guided diagnostics are an invaluable tool, but sometimes you have to go beyond the test plan and prove the fault before replacing expensive components.
