🔧 AUDI A6 2.0 TDI – THERMOSTAT & WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT! 💧

Another busy day in the workshop at Chapmans Audi Specialist!

This Audi A6, fitted with the 2.0 TDI DKNA engine, came into us with a coolant leak.

Following our initial diagnosis and further stripping down, we traced the source of the leak to the thermostat housing.

With the faulty component identified, we are now replacing both the thermostat and water pump with new parts.

Once everything has been reassembled, we will vacuum-fill and bleed the cooling system to remove any trapped air, before carrying out our final checks to ensure the repair has been successful. ✅

🔧 AUDI 2.0 TDI – THERMOSTAT HOUSING COOLANT LEAK REPAIRED 🔧

Following on from yesterday’s post, where we diagnosed a coolant leak on this 2.0 TDI DSUD engine, we traced the leak to the thermostat housing.

The photo shows the new genuine thermostat assembly alongside the old unit.

If you look closely, you'll notice that the old thermostat on the right has an electrical connection, whereas the replacement genuine part no longer requires it.

This isn't a missing connection or an incorrect part. Audi has issued a TPi (Technical Product Information) explaining that the electrical connection is no longer required with the updated component.

The original wiring connector is therefore left disconnected and, as confirmed by the TPi, this will not generate a fault code or illuminate the engine management light.

It's a good example of why having access to the correct manufacturer technical information and dealer-level diagnostic equipment is so important when repairing modern vehicles.

💧 Audi 2.0 TDI – Coolant Leak Diagnosed & Repaired 🔧

The owner of this 2021 Audi 2.0 TDI, fitted with the DSUD engine, reported a coolant leak.

We started by carrying out a coolant system pressure test, which indicated that the leak was coming from underneath the charge cooler area.

After further stripping and investigation, we found the cause — a failed thermostat housing.

The most challenging part of this repair was actually disconnecting the coolant hoses! For some reason, every connection was extremely tight and required a considerable amount of time and effort to separate without causing damage.

Another fault successfully diagnosed and repaired. ✅

Audi A8 – Intermittent Engine Speed Sensor Fault 🔍

This Audi A8 came into the workshop after the customer reported that the vehicle was jolting intermittently while driving on the motorway.

The customer had already scanned the vehicle himself, but no fault codes were stored. We carried out our own diagnostic scan before and after a road test and, again, the vehicle did not log any relevant fault codes.

This is a great example of why diagnostics isn't always simply about reading fault codes.

During further investigation, we used an oscilloscope to monitor various electrical signals while the vehicle was being driven. While analysing the waveforms, we identified an abnormality in the engine speed/crankshaft position sensor signal.

We've now got a direction to work in, but we're not jumping straight into replacing parts. Further diagnosis is required, including wiring, signal integrity and sensor/pick-up checks, to establish the actual cause of the signal interruption.

No fault codes doesn't always mean no fault!

This Audi S8 came into the workshop with several different faults – including one the customer wasn’t even aware of.

During our initial inspection, we noticed a thud when braking. On closer inspection, we could actually see the front wheels continuing to move slightly even after the vehicle had come to a stop.

Further investigation was definitely required!

With the vehicle being moved carefully backwards and forwards, we inspected the suspension from underneath and identified excessive play in the front lower rear-most trailing arm bushes.

The fault has now been confirmed and replacement suspension arms have been authorised. 🔧

It’s a good example of why a thorough inspection can uncover problems before they become more serious.
