Big congratulations to Jaden for an excellent first time pass on Friday.

Jaden has been a truly motivational project for me as you will never meet such a nicer dude. We share so many common interests and he almost reminds me of a younger version of myself. He has an absolutely brilliant family who I would conversate with every morning before his lesson, most notably his mum, grandma and grandpa who used to be a driving instructor himself.

I've seldom coached someone so hard, but I could see the potential within him and knew he needed that guiding hand to get the best out of himself.

Well, the result speaks for itself. A first time pass that kicked off what would turn out to be an amazing weekend for me.

Jaden struggled a little bit in the build up to the test, nerves clearly getting him flustered. I was slightly worried, as like with all of my students I'm rooting for them to do well with every fibre of my being. A huge shout out needs to go to the Wigston examiner who I shall not name who was amazing at helping Jayden settle in to his test and had a great conversation with him on the way round.

This allowed Jayden to show his absolute best, but it was by no means an easy morning. Due to several road works and road closures Wigston was unusually busy, almost to rush hour levels of chaos. It was a tense and nervy ride for me in the back, wondering what must be going through Jayden's head as it took him nearly 3 minutes to find a gap to turn right at a T-Junction. He almost got the wrong exit at a roundabout too before very quickly remembering how I had shown him to do it a few weeks prior.

Through sheer grit and determination he was rewarded with a first time pass and one very very happy family upon his return. I cannot be more happy for you Jayden!! I'll always remember the many road trips we made to Donnington, Burton, Melton and others and it all paid off and made you the driver you became.

A huge congratulations to Harry Baines on passing his test first time.

Harry has been one of the most sensible, level headed yet talented and dedicated students I've ever taught. He's super switched on and there was never a dull lesson, always engaging and asking super thoughtful questions.

All of those traits helped him secure this result with a truly professional drive.

The funny thing about tests is that you can feel like you're dying inside and that you've failed 3 times by the second roundabout only to discover when you get back to the TC that you've impressed your examiner and your instructor and only recorded a single driving fault.

Such was the case for Harry who had a nightmare of events to deal with on a very tricky test route.

Everything seemed to be going to plan until Harry accidentally took a wrong exit on a roundabout. Not a problem, as the examiner simply turned him around at the next one, but once we were back on course we discovered the Police were shutting down the carriageway causing us the need to seek an alternative route.

The butterfly effect is a strange thing and I always wonder what would have befell us had Harry gone the correct way in the first place.

The examiner took Harry down an industrial estate.... which was also closed off, causing Harry to now have to execute a 3 point turn (A manoeuvre no longer requested on modern driving tests) with two very impatient vans waiting on either side of the road.

Holding his nerve, he managed to make it out of the industrial estate only to be caught up in half a mile of traffic that had now formed as a result of the impromptu road closure. Another order to go off piste by the examiner saw Harry have to negotiate the car down some very narrow side streets in order to get back on a clear route to the test centre. All in all his test over-ran by a good 15 minutes, way longer than it should have been.

Yet after all that, one minor and a very well deserved pass certificate were the result.

You have been an exemplary student Harry. Well done, good luck and enjoy your car.

And the circle is complete!

A set of friends, each of whom learned with me from scratch over the last couple of years, have all now completed the journey.

It started with Brandon, followed by Alfie and Owen, and now Harry who completed one of the best test runs I've ever witnessed yesterday to take home the prize first time.

It was an exemplary drive.

The kind of drive which received compliments from the examiner and one which I wish I could show other students.

You were calm, sensible, measured, clever and absolutely on it from start to finish.

Except your parking manoeuvre. We won't talk about that. 😅

You listened to everything I told you, brought your A-game and drove like a pro, saving your best performance for when it really counted.

You've been a pleasure to teach. We nearly died a couple times but you always listened and took any feedback with grace and humility. A model student, but don't let that go to your head!

A massive congratulations to Kai who passed on his first attempt today!

I don't normally run on weekends and Kai took me away from my usual gig at Tropical Birdland in order to attempt his test, but boy did he make it worth it!!

The absolute best way to make your weekend a great one is by passing your test on the first try!

Kai has been one of my fastest ever passes, beating my own personal score from 18 years ago by a whopping 10 hours! Perhaps I'm a better teacher than driver, or maybe Kai is just that good!!

Either way, Kai's rate of learning as we approached test day skyrocketed. His dad described him as a sponge and it really only took me telling him once for him to commit it to memory and apply it absolutely perfectly.

Some people thrive under pressure. Others fold. Kai is definitely someone who relishes the challenge and is able to adapt and improvise in any situation. A valuable skill to have on the road.

Happy driving my friend, to pass at 17 years old and have all the opportunities open to you that a driving license affords is a privilege not easily earned.

Every pass has its own story. But none will ever be quite as special as this one.

A few years ago, a friend of mine by the name of Des Chandler approached me and asked if I could give his granddaughter some pointers.

You see, I've been racing go karts since I was a teenager. Over the years I've met many wonderful characters involved in all areas of Motorsport, but none quite so charming as Des. He was a former stock car racer, and I was more than happy to help him introduce the thrill of motor racing to his young protégé.

Enter - Phoebe.

To be honest, she didn't really need my help. She was naturally gifted and already fast from the moment she hit the track. We entered numerous team races together and I still remember the day we got our first win.

Fast forward several years later and her mum Donna asked if I could teach her to be as competent on the road as she was on the track.

Some people are just meant to drive. Phoebe is one of those people.

The same natural ability that allowed her to flourish on the circuit shone through with every lesson we completed on the road. I've never taught someone that has so studiously devoted herself to the task at hand despite all the other commitments she had going on in her life.

While most of my students simply rock up on test day and live with the result, you were up all night analysing junctions and road scenarios like it was a finals exam! It was that incredible focus on your preparation that made today's result so utterly and satisfyingly righteous! You deserved this one and you earned it!!

You've done yourself proud, you've done your parents proud and you've done me proud. And most of all, you've done Des proud. He would be delighted at the simply incredible person you've become.

A great pass for Jacob on his first attempt!!

Despite being almost overcome with emotional stress as the test unfolded, Jacob held his nerve and was righteously rewarded with a pass result once he made it to the finish line.

We had a brilliant experience with the examiner from Wigston test centre, he helped Jacob feel at ease and took the pressure off when rightfully there was no need to feel any at all.

Like most learners, Jacob had good days and bad days whilst on his learning journey, but progress really shone through in the final weeks where mistakes became less frequent, less major and his standard of driving was far more consistent.

All it took was a bit of hard graft and dedication to the task at hand.

A well deserved pass. Stay safe out there dude.

What a way to start the week.

Blue skies, beautiful weather, and a fantastic pass for Connor.

Test day seemed to attract every road user to come and spectate as Connor found himself on rather busy roads, but he handled it like a pro, even calmly circumnavigating a road closure which saw us take a slight detour that prolonged the test just that little bit longer.

But it all payed off. Connor has been diligent, consistent and thorough in his lessons with me over the last few months. His inquisitive brain and thirst for knowledge meant he was always asking interesting and thought out questions. These questions were vital ingredients that allowed him to develop as a driver. There's so much to learn on the road that it's almost impossible to cover every base, but despite a rather cluttered collection of stones that lay in front of him, Connor made sure that most of them got upturned.

I will miss the interesting conversations we shared and our common interests in everything from Formula 1 to science and physics. I wish you the best of luck for your next phase at University and have no doubt at some point in the future you'll be working on a groundbreaking project at the forefront of human advancement.

Over the moon for this one!!

Finally, after much blood sweat and tears, Lex pulled off an achievement she had been reaching for like nothing else.

Lex reached out to me after being on the end of some heartbreaking setbacks whilst she was with another instructor. I could tell straight away she had the talent, she just needed that extra boost of confidence.

I told her that if she really wanted this then the only way was full send. Full commitment, full determination, full perseverance.

She took my words to heart and brilliantly listened, adopted and practiced every little bit of advice I could impart to her.

I must admit I was nervous on test day because she deserved this. All the hard work she had faithfully commited to deserved a reward. And it was a reward she got!!!

Well done on passing with a brilliant drive, I told you I would bet my house on you passing and you proved it.

Another first time pass!!!

This one by Arrian, who has been an absolute pleasure to teach.

He took on board all my advice and, just as I had instructed, drove his test like a grandma plodding about the area.

Never has such an achievement been so... Boring. But that is EXACTLY how to pass a driving test.

No drama, no theatrics, no excitement, no heroics.

Just pure ex*****on.

Aarian understood this to the letter and, following his test said "that was easy."

But that's because you made it easy brother!!

All of your hard work, diligence, appetite for learning and constant self application and improvement paid off. Even those mock tests with 4 majors and a page full of minors were all part of your learning, a journey that resulted in you passing first time with ease.

I will miss our lessons and your clever, insightful character, but can now be assured that you'll be safe on the road. Well done!!

Massive congratulations to Jess Michie on passing her driving test today FIRST TIME!!

This has enabled a great amount of gloating to her household, as everybody else passed second time, something I'm sure she'll remind them of every time they make a comment on her driving.

In truth, there is barely a comment to be made as with only 2 minors and a relatively fast learning progression her result today stands out as one of the best passes I've had to date.

Jess is mature beyond her years and knew her own potential and what she was capable of before even I did. Her experience driving tractors on the farm definitely put her on the right track for success and she took all of my advice onboard without question.

Your result is testament to your hard work and brilliant attitude. Enjoy your freedom and every moment on the road.

And enjoy your Top Gear style cheap car challenge road trip vacation!!
