Operating a recovery truck in the UK comes with unique rules and grey areas around licensing, MOTs, and drivers' hours. Getting it right is essential to avoid fines or compliance issues!
Here is what you need to know before getting behind the wheel:

β€’ License Requirements: Standard Cat B covers up to 3.5t, but most recovery trucks require a C1 (3.5t–7.5t) or full Category C license.

β€’ Operator’s License Exemptions: Exemption applies only when strictly recovering broken-down vehicles; using it for general haulage means you need an O-license.

β€’ Tachographs & Working Hours: If you operate within a 100km radius of base for pure recovery, you are exempt from standard EU drivers' hours (domestic rules apply).

β€’ Personal Use Warning: Recovery vehicles are taxed under special rates; using them for moving personal property violates VED regulations.

β€’ Earning Potential: HGV-licensed recovery drivers can earn between Β£40,000 to Β£47,000+ (with OTE reaching up to Β£55k)!
Make sure your operation stays fully legal and road-ready. Check out our complete guide to UK recovery truck regulations!

Ready to step up your driving career? Getting your HGV Provisional Licence is the very first step toward driving a lorry in the UK!
The application process is completely free from the DVLA, but there are a few essential steps you need to follow to avoid processing delays:

β€’ Must-Have Prerequisite: You must hold a full Category B car licence before applying.

β€’ Paperwork Required: Complete the D2 application form and order it alongside your D4 medical report.

β€’ Medical Examination: Book a D4 driver medical with a registered doctor to confirm your eyesight, blood pressure, and overall fitness to drive.

β€’ Processing Time: Expect to wait roughly 10 to 14 days (or up to 3 weeks) for the DVLA to issue your provisional entitlement.

β€’ Pro Tip: Tick all available provisional categories (C1, C, CE) on your D2 form to keep your future driving and training options wide open!

Once your provisional lands, you’re legally cleared to book your theory tests and start practical training! Check out our full step-by-step guide to get started.

Thinking about owning or driving an HGV for strictly personal use?
Whether you're moving house, hauling a private horsebox, or using a heavy vehicle for non-commercial hobbies, the rules for a Private HGV differ significantly from commercial haulage, but compliance is still key!
Here is what you need to know:
β€’ Licensing Still Applies: You still need the correct category on your driving licence (e.g., C or C1) for the vehicle's weight, even for personal use.

β€’ Tachograph Exemption: Used solely for non-commercial, personal reasons? You are generally exempt from using a tachograph or strict drivers' hours rest rules.

β€’ 2026 Tax Rates: HGVs renewing tax between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027 can benefit from a temporary Β£1 annual VED rate (HGV levy still applies where applicable).

β€’ DVLA Reclassification: Using a former commercial vehicle for personal use? Make sure to update your V5C logbook with the DVLA to avoid compliance issues if stopped.

β€’ Driving on Private Land: Standard licensing rules apply to any land accessible to the public (like open yards). Only securely gated, non-public land falls outside licensing requirements.

Remember: The moment any payment or business activity is involved- even for a single trip- the vehicle stops being private, and full commercial rules apply!
