⛽ Fuel prices are climbing so here's how to make every litre go further 👍

With UK fuel prices continuing to rise, filling up is becoming an increasingly painful part of running a car. The average UK diesel price reached £2 per litre last week, while petrol is also approaching £1.75 per litre.

There are a few simple things you can do to squeeze a little more mileage out of every tank:

🔧 Check your tyre pressures
Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance, meaning your engine has to work harder. Check them regularly and before longer journeys.

🚗 Go easier on the accelerator
Hard acceleration uses significantly more fuel. Try to build speed smoothly rather than repeatedly putting your foot down and then braking heavily.

👀 Look further ahead
Anticipate traffic, junctions and traffic lights so you can ease off the accelerator earlier and avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration.

⚖️ Lose the extra weight
That roof box, heavy equipment or boot full of things you don't need? Take it out. Carrying unnecessary weight uses more fuel.

🏎️ Watch your speed
Higher speeds increase fuel consumption, particularly on motorways. Staying within the limit and maintaining a steady speed can make a noticeable difference.

🛞 Keep your car properly maintained
Regular servicing and addressing problems such as incorrect tyre pressures or mechanical issues can help keep your vehicle running efficiently.

💨 Remove roof racks when you're not using them
Roof bars and boxes increase aerodynamic drag, particularly at motorway speeds. If you don't need them, take them off.

⚙️ DSG Gearboxes – clever technology that needs specialist care

DSG gearboxes have become a familiar part of the Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda world, combining the efficiency of a manual gearbox with the convenience of automatic shifting.

But how do they actually work?

Unlike a conventional automatic gearbox, a DSG is essentially a manually based gearbox that's electronically controlled, using hydraulics and two clutches to manage the gears.

The clever part is the mechatronic unit. This electronic and hydraulic control system manages the clutches and gear selection, allowing extremely rapid gear changes.

While you're driving, the mechatronic unit is constantly monitoring information such as:

🔧 Engine speed
🔧 Engine torque
🔧 Driver demand
🔧 Vehicle speed
🔧 Braking
🔧 Driving conditions

It uses this information to anticipate which gear you're likely to need next and pre-selects it in advance.

When the gear change is required, control is effectively transferred from one clutch to the other, allowing the next gear to engage incredibly quickly. At the same time, the system can begin preparing for the following gear.

Why does DSG servicing matter?

Like any complex mechanical system, DSG gearboxes require the correct maintenance. Depending on the specific gearbox, regular transmission-fluid and filter servicing can be an important part of keeping the system operating correctly.

Neglecting the correct maintenance schedule can contribute to problems with shifting, clutch operation and the mechatronic system.
