Why Do Driving Instructors Charge for Late Cancellations?

One of the questions I am occasionally asked is:

"Why should I pay for a lesson I haven't had?"

It's a fair question, so I'd like to explain why most professional driving instructors have a cancellation policy.

Like the majority of Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) in the UK, I am self-employed. This means I only earn an income when lessons take place. Unlike many other professions, I cannot simply recover lost earnings when a client cancels at short notice.

When you book a driving lesson, that time is reserved exclusively for you. I turn away other enquiries and organise my working day around my diary. If a lesson is cancelled at short notice, it is often impossible to fill that slot, meaning both the time and income are lost.

In addition to this, the costs of running a driving school continue regardless of whether a lesson goes ahead. These costs include:

- Vehicle finance or purchase costs
- Insurance
- Fuel and maintenance
- Vehicle tax and servicing
- Training and professional development
- Advertising and administration
- Licensing and registration fees

When you pay for a lesson, you are not only paying for the use of the car. You are also paying for the knowledge, training, experience, and professional instruction provided by a qualified ADI.

As a learner, you rightly expect your instructor to be reliable, punctual, professional, and committed to helping you succeed. In return, instructors ask that clients respect the appointments they have booked and provide adequate notice if plans change.

For this reason, I operate a 48-hour cancellation policy. If a lesson is cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice, the lesson fee may still be payable. This policy is explained when lessons are first booked and forms part of the agreement between instructor and pupil.

This is no different from many other appointment-based services such as dentists, private healthcare providers, tutors, beauty salons, and other professional businesses that reserve time specifically for their clients.

Of course, I understand that genuine emergencies and unforeseen circumstances can arise. I always try to be reasonable and consider each situation individually. However, repeated short-notice cancellations or missed lessons can make it difficult to provide a consistent service and may result in lessons being discontinued.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. By respecting booked lesson times, you help me provide a reliable and professional service to all of my pupils.

What an emotional and truly unforgettable weekend we’ve just had 💙❤️💙

Yesterday morning, our youngest daughter Emma and son-in-law Scott welcomed their second baby into the world, making Charlie a proud big brother and bringing beautiful baby Harvey safely into the family 💙

On that very same day, our oldest daughter Alanah completed her first ever full marathon in Edinburgh — an incredible achievement that showed amazing determination, resilience and strength from start to finish.

Our son Ben has also been receiving fantastic feedback from colleagues about his work ethic, attitude and the exceptionally high standards he sets for himself.

I honestly couldn’t be prouder of all 3 of our amazing children. This weekend, both of my daughters pushed their bodies to the absolute extreme — but in two completely different ways and both showed unbelievable strength, courage and determination. At the same time, Ben continues to make us immensely proud through the person he is, the effort he gives and the standards he sets for himself.

Harvey really couldn’t have chosen a better time to arrive. Somehow, it all worked perfectly and allowed me to be there with Emma and Scott for his birth — such a special privilege — while also being there to support Alanah for her challenge. 💜

For any parent with 2 or more children, you simply can't not be there for all of their important moments, milestones and achievements choosing is completely unimaginable. (Thank you Harvey) There’s honestly nowhere else you’d rather be.

💙❤️💙

Many learner drivers hear the word “coasting” during lessons — but plenty of experienced motorists still don’t fully understand why it’s dangerous.

Coasting happens when drivers press the clutch down too long or leave the car in neutral while moving.

It often occurs:

Approaching junctions
Rolling downhill
Slowing for roundabouts
During traffic

The problem?
You lose significant control over the vehicle.

When the clutch is disengaged, the engine no longer helps stabilise the car properly. Steering response, braking balance, and overall control become less effective.

That’s especially risky on:

Wet British roads
Slippery bends
Busy junctions
Downhill sections

Many drivers coast because they think it saves fuel or feels smoother. In reality, modern vehicles are designed to operate more safely and efficiently when properly in gear.

Good driving means staying connected to the vehicle.

Professional instructors teach:
✔ Brake first
✔ Select the correct gear
✔ Maintain control
✔ Release clutch smoothly

Approaching a roundabout in neutral leaves you less prepared if traffic conditions suddenly change.

You may need to:

Accelerate quickly
Avoid another vehicle
Adjust position rapidly

Coasting delays your reaction capability.

Rainy UK weather makes this even more dangerous because reduced grip demands better vehicle stability and smoother control.

Another issue is downhill coasting. Drivers often allow speed to build excessively without proper engine braking.

This overheats brakes and increases stopping distances.

Defensive driving isn’t just about observation — it’s about maintaining full vehicle control at all times.

The safest drivers stay calm, balanced, and mechanically connected to the car.

Smooth gear control improves:

Safety
Fuel efficiency
Vehicle stability
Driver confidence

Driving properly isn’t about shortcuts.
It’s about control.

Share this with someone who always rolls toward junctions in neutral.
