Work Confirmed to Connect Scunthorpe’s Southern M181 Junction to Town

Long-awaited plans to properly connect Scunthorpe’s southern M181 junction to the rest of the town have been confirmed, marking a major step forward for the area’s transport network.

A new link road will connect the M181 roundabout directly to Burringham Road, transforming what has long been a standalone junction into a fully functioning southern gateway into the town.

Once complete, motorists travelling from Ashby, Bottesford, Burringham, Yaddlethorpe and Messingham will benefit from a faster and more direct route to the motorway. The scheme is expected to significantly ease congestion at Berkeley Circle, improving traffic flow across Scunthorpe.

Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, Rob Waltham, said the project delivers on a long-standing commitment.

“We said from the start this would be about creating a proper gateway into Scunthorpe – and that’s exactly what this does,” he said.

“Big infrastructure projects don’t appear overnight. They’re built in stages – and this is the one where people will see the biggest difference – it turns the plan into a working route.
“We made a promise to invest for the long term, and working with Cllr Walshe, who has championed this for a number of years, we’ve been able to keep it.”

The scheme will be delivered by Keepmoat, with work due to begin in the coming weeks. Funding comes via the Local Regeneration Fund programme, with the money confirmed in the council’s budget approved by Full Council on Tuesday 24 February.

The project represents the third major investment into the local motorway network in recent years and is the first significant scheme of its kind since the M181 was originally built in 1978.

Deputy leader and cabinet member for highways Neil Poole said the focus is on delivering real benefits for residents.

“Residents aren’t overly concerned about phases – they care about getting to work quicker, getting home easier and not sitting in traffic at Berkeley Circle,” he said.

“This link makes a real, practical difference. It gives communities in Ashby, Bottesford, Burringham and beyond a direct route to the motorway and takes pressure off the busiest junction in town.

“That’s what this is about – building the roads first so growth doesn’t mean gridlock.”

Construction is expected to bring visible progress on the ground in the coming weeks, with the completed route set to reshape how traffic moves in and out of southern Scunthorpe.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has confirmed changes to the practical car driving test booking system that will significantly reduce the number of times a test can be changed.

From 31 March 2026, learners and Driver Trainers will be limited to two changes per practical car test, reduced from the current allowance of six. The change follows a DVSA consultation aimed at making the booking system fairer and more secure.

What is changing
Under the new rules, a test change includes:

changing the test date or time
changing the test centre
swapping a test between two learners
All practical car tests, whether booked by the learner or by a Driver Trainer, will be affected.

When the new rules come into force, all booked tests will have two available changes, regardless of how many amendments were made before 31 March 2026.

DVSA is encouraging Driver Trainers to ensure learners only book their test when they are ready to take it and able to attend at their chosen location.

Our new toll system will go live, starting Saturday, 31st January, and will be fully operational on Monday, 2nd February.

The new system – called Humber Bridge Toll - is the biggest change in the bridge’s history since it opened. It doesn’t matter if you cross every day or once a year, every driver who uses the bridge needs to know how the Humber Bridge Toll system will affect them.

We’ve created an info hub with everything you need to know which will launch in a couple of days. In the meantime, let’s talk about the go-live timeline.

Launching the new system is a complex job, which is why it’s taking place over a weekend. Here’s a rundown of the go-live timeline …

From now up to (and including) Friday 30th January

• Keep crossing the bridge and paying your toll as normal.
• Friday 30th January is the last day of the existing system.
Saturday 31st January
• The existing toll booths will close.
• All traffic will be routed through the current tag lanes, which are being widened to two lanes in both directions.
• The tolls will increase.
• HumberTAG accounts are no longer accessible.
• The new system takes over capturing crossing data.
• The migration of more than 50,000 HumberTAG accounts begins.
Sunday 1st February
• The migration of HumberTAG accounts continues

Monday 2nd February
• The brand new payment website is live.
• Our new app is available to download.
• PayPoint locations can take toll payments.
• The new system is fully operational.

Those crossing the bridge over the go-live weekend who do not have an account will be able to pay the toll once the system is up and running on Monday, February 2. They'll have until midnight on Tuesday, February 3, to do so.

We will be releasing a lot of information over the coming weeks so make sure you give us a follow and turn on notifications.
If you know someone who crosses the bridge, tag them in the comments. Likewise, if you know someone who’s offline and drives, help them out and mention the changes.

Did you know that if you wait 24 hours after passing your driving test before getting insured on your car you can save as much as £200 and upto £500 if wait a week!

Probably something to do with the euphoria or novelty of passing your test settling down and you are more focused on your driving and being safer.

A lot of people have been asking when the app and new payment website will be available. Both the website and app will launch on Monday 2nd February.

Why is the app and payment website not available sooner? The answer is actually pretty simple: the app and payment website link to the new toll system and that won't be fully operational until Monday 2nd February.

It's great that so many of you want to get ahead and set up the app in advance of the launch, but after carefully considering all the options, we decided this rollout was the best option.

We've created an info hub that gives all the details about the new system - called Humber Bridge Toll - as well as answering a lot of your questions. Just follow this link https://new.humberbridge.co.uk/info-hub/
