🚗🌀 GLENROTHES SPIRAL ROUNDABOUTS – STAY IN YOUR LANE! 🌀🚗

Do you find the spiral roundabouts in Glenrothes confusing? You’re definitely not alone!

One of the biggest challenges for learner drivers is knowing which lane to use and how to follow it safely around the roundabout.

💡 BRYAN’S DRIVING TIP OF THE DAY

✅ 1. Choose your lane early
Look at the road signs and lane markings as you approach. Make sure you’re in the correct lane for your intended exit.

✅ 2. Follow the spiral markings
The lane markings are designed to guide you towards your exit. Follow the lane you’re in rather than cutting across the markings.

✅ 3. Don’t drift into another lane
Keep checking your position and steer smoothly. Avoid moving across lanes without proper observations.

✅ 4. Check your mirrors
Be aware of vehicles beside you, especially when the lanes curve around the roundabout.

✅ 5. Don’t panic if you’re in the wrong lane
Follow the lane you’re in safely. Never make a sudden lane change to reach your intended exit.

🚦 REMEMBER:
A spiral roundabout isn’t about constantly changing lanes. It’s about choosing the correct lane on approach and following the road markings towards your exit.

🚗 LEARNER DRIVER QUESTION

You’re approaching a roundabout and suddenly realise…

😳 You’re in the wrong lane.

What should you do?

One of the biggest things I try to teach learners is not to panic.

If you realise you’re in the wrong lane, don’t make a sudden move just to follow the route you originally wanted.

Keep things safe, follow the road markings and signs, and deal with the situation calmly.

You can always find somewhere safe to turn around afterwards.

A wrong turn can be fixed. A risky last-second decision isn’t worth it.

🚗 3 SKILLS EVERY LEARNER DRIVER NEEDS! 👀🧠

Learning to drive isn’t just about steering, gears and pedals. A big part of becoming a safe, confident driver is learning to see what’s happening, predict what might happen next, and plan ahead.

👀 AWARENESS
Look well ahead and keep scanning. Look for pedestrians, cyclists, parked cars, junctions, traffic lights and anything that could affect your journey.

🔮 ANTICIPATION
Ask yourself: “What might happen next?”

A pedestrian standing beside a parked car?
A car approaching a junction?
A bus about to pull away?

Don’t wait for the hazard to develop — think ahead!

🧠 PLANNING
Once you’ve spotted something, decide what you’re going to do.

SEE 👀 → PREDICT 🔮 → PLAN 🧠 → ACT 🚗

The earlier you spot potential hazards, the more time you give yourself to make a safe, smooth decision.

🚗 Awareness, Anticipation & Planning

👀 1. AWARENESS — “What can I see?”

Encourage learners to keep their eyes moving and look well ahead, rather than concentrating only on the road immediately in front of the car.

Teach them to look for:

* 🚶 Pedestrians near the kerb
* 🚗 Parked vehicles and vehicles emerging from side roads
* 🚦 Traffic lights and junctions
* 🚴 Cyclists and motorcyclists
* 🚌 Buses pulling away or stopping
* ⚠️ Road signs, markings and hazards
* 👀 Anything that could potentially affect their path

Learner tip:

“Don’t just look at what’s happening — look for what could happen next.”

🔮 2. ANTICIPATION — “What might happen?”

Once they have spotted something, get them thinking about possible outcomes.

For example:

You see a parked car ahead with a pedestrian standing beside it.

Ask:

“What could happen?”

The pedestrian might:

* Walk into the road
* Open the car door
* Step out from behind the vehicle

The learner should therefore be prepared to adjust their speed and position.

Key phrase:

“See the hazard early, give yourself time to react.”

🧠 3. PLANNING — “What am I going to do?”

This is where awareness and anticipation turn into safe driving decisions.

Teach learners to think:

See → Predict → Plan → Act

For example:

🚗 See: A queue of traffic ahead.
🔮 Predict: I may need to stop.
🧠 Plan: Ease off the accelerator and check my mirrors.
✅ Act: Slow down smoothly and stop if necessary.

Planning early means less sudden braking, fewer rushed decisions and a much smoother drive.

🚗 STRUGGLING WITH SPIRAL ROUNDABOUTS? 🔄

Spiral roundabouts can look complicated, but once you understand the lane markings and road signs, they become much easier to deal with!

Here are a few tips for learners 👇

✅ Read the signs early
Check the direction signs before you reach the roundabout. They will help you choose the correct lane.

✅ Get into the correct lane
Look at the road markings and arrows. Don’t leave your lane simply because another vehicle is beside you.

✅ Follow the road markings
Spiral roundabouts are designed to guide you around the roundabout. Keep checking your lane and follow the markings.

✅ Keep checking your mirrors 👀
Before changing direction or moving across lanes, use your mirrors and check your blind spot where appropriate.

✅ Don’t panic if it looks complicated!
Slow down, give yourself time to read the signs and make decisions. Good observation is much more important than rushing.

⚠️ Remember: Every spiral roundabout can be laid out differently, so don’t assume the same lane position will work at every roundabout.

🚘 TOP TIP:
If you’re unsure, practise the same roundabout several times with your instructor. Repetition builds confidence!
