timing chain replacement ⛓️

been down at this customers house prviously to listen to a rattling noise which i narrowed down to be the timing chain rattling which didn’t go away when oil pressure built so i knew it was bad, advised customer not to drive until fixed to prevent risk of catasrophic engine failure.

came down yesterday afternoon to replace. once stripped down I was met with a chain so slack i’m amazed it never jumped a tooth or 10.

old one removed, everything cleaned and refitted with new parts consisting of new -
• timing cover gasket
• chain
• chain guides
• tensioner
• camshaft sprocket (not vvt sprocket as it was a whopping £312)

built back up ensuring everything was put back together properly. started up and noise away so then bled to coolant system and handed keys back to the customer and advised on 4 new tyres as they were all getting pretty low which they assured me will be sorted asap.

not the most enjoyable chain i’ve done due to amount of components removed to gain access in a pretty tight space, possibly because it was my first time doing one on these engines but still got there in the end and customer now feels safe to drive the vehicle again which they need for work.

day made even better seeing arsenal bottle the champions league 😛

rocker cover gasket and rear ABS sensor replacement

serviced this vehicle last weekend and advised customer about an oil leak from rocker cover gasket and a failed rear ABS sensor, they asked if i could come down this weekend to fix, which i did.

rocker cover removed and cleaned up aswell as mating surface and removed traces of oil from front of engine which had ran down, old gasket removed and new one fitted to then build back up and move onto the sensor.

jacked car up, removed wheel and old sensor, cleaned up the hole and fitted the new one and cleared the codes followed by a quick road test to ensure the light stayed off, which it did.

wee thanks to the customer aswell for supplying a bacon roll and a can of juice for my brekky 👍🏽

water pump replacement 💦

previously fitted an alternator belt on this vehicle a couple of weeks ago and advised at the time that the water pump was leaking, customer chose to not replace, I then got a call at the beginning of the week stating the vehicle was using a lot of coolant so went to inspect and found that the water pump was infact still leaking internally through the pulley.

went back down on friday night to replace. old one removed, mating surface cleaned up and new one fitted then cleaned all the coolant residue as best as i could, coolant topped back up and system bled.

forgot to get picture of finished job as battery died but engine looks a lot cleaner and not stained pink anymore 😂

front driveshaft replacement

customer had me down to investigate a clicking/clunking noise while moving and steering turned, jacked it up and found excess movement in the cv joint on the driveshaft caused by lack of grease as one of the clips had burst.

ordered new driveshaft for couple days later and came down to fit . noise is now away and customer can now feel safe driving their car again 😄

customer complaint was handbrake inoperative and squeaking while braking, came down to inspect and found both handbrake levers on the calipers to be siezed on.

tried freeing them off but were still sticking on after lots of lubrication so new calipers needed, got the parts over the weekend and went down to fit last night.

new calipers on and handbrake adjusted up to 3/4 clicks to lock.

front brake pad replacement

customer had check brake pad warning light on dash so i came down last night to check which ones and found front pads to be low.

came back down today to replace aswell as new wear sensor and cleaned up the lip on the disc.

as usual old pads removed, carrier cleaned and new pads greased at contact points to ensure no squeaking before building back up.

light out and customer happy with the work done 😄

front brake pad replacement

another vehicle i have checked previously and advised on front brake pads being low.

old pads removed, carrier cleaned and new pads fitted with a little copper grease around the contact points to ensure no squeaking.

rear upper control arm replacement and pad wear sensor

fixing a previous mechanics f**k ups yet again today, was at this vehicle last week for a general inspection and found upper control arm ball joint to have slight play in it likely due to one of the bolts not being tightened previously, not the most pleasant of bolts to get access to as you have to go over the back of the subframe with a long extension to get to one side of it however this is no excuse for leaving a slack bolt on a vital piece of suspension.

removed old arm after a good bit of shouting trying to get the nut of the other side of that bolt and had to remove brake line from caliper as it goes through the centre of the arm,

new arm fitted making sure BOTH bolts were fully tightened aswell as ball joint nut and caliper bled to remove air from the brake system.

on the other side of this vehicle someone had decided to put the inner pad on the outside of the disc and outer on the inside and been too lazy to rectify and put the pad wear sensor but instead just wrapping the wire up and cable tying it to the subframe causing a break in the wire and check brake pad light to come on even though there was plenty meat left in them.

swapped pads to correct sides and new wire fitted and light out.

another example of cheap doesn’t always mean good, save yourself the hassle of having work done twice and get it done right by a reliable mechanic the first time 🙋🏽‍♂️.
