190 Evo 2 Exhaust Saga.

So around 23 years ago I made up a full 3" Stainless exhaust system as the old original 2.5" system was pretty shot. I was well pleased with it because although a larger diameter, I had actually ended up with more ground clearance. All those years ago it didn't matter about what stuck out the back. The 3" to twin tail pipes silencer did the job, it having had various tail pipes over the years. 23 years later it was time to make it right. A good friend sourced the ceramic coated original style tail pipes for me at tremendous expense. More than a standard full system tbh πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ˜’ The problem was the original twin pipes were pretty close together so they couldn't be fitted. No problem, I'll just get a different silencer but that deemed impossible. The tail pipes were then left with someone who dealt with some aftermarket exhaust suppliers to try to have one made. 8 mths later and no joy. Needs must, so my only option was to make one myself. It took an age and many many hours, however its done now and was well worth the effort. πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ

When time allowed I got started on the Evo 2 to ready it for the summer. Did I just say summer πŸ€”
Aquick mot check first revealed that the front ball joint rubber boots along with two rears had deteriorated badly and starting to actually crumble. Ball joints were good, but given that they were probably 30 year old including the wishbone bushes it made sense to just change the lot. 4 camber bolts and two pinch bolts. No problemo... 😭
There's alway one. The others pulled out without any trouble. Come to the last one and the bolt was siezed in the bush causing it to just turn with the bolt. What a nightmare. First I cut the wishbone off, then started pulling the bush apart bit by bit until I finally got to the bolt tube. Heat upon heat until I finally got the bolt off. Best part of an hour and a half on that one bolt. No idea how I can charge for that 🀣🀣🀣 The same perished boots on the rear track arms, but they were straight forward to do. Spent a fair amount of time setting up camber castor and alignment which was well worthwhile. In the 26 years I've driven this, it always had a bit of a pull to the left. I just put it down to my fat ass being on that side and the camber of the roads. Not anymore ffs!! No pulling whatsover.... The rear passengers side mud guard or should I say mud trap meant I also had a two inch by half inch plate that required welding where the bracket attached to the wheel well.... 😭
The next post will be on the exhaust saga.... to be continued. πŸ˜‰

Well here's something a bit different. In for a good check over and replacement of any suspect or perished hoses as it was built quite some time ago. Front to rear heater hose and the ones under the dash on the passengers side. Leaking radiator which proved to be more than a bit of a ball ach
🫀
Replaced a badly (very) perished fuel hose that could have been the end of it, running above the front manifold. Arranged a better breather set up, and made up a heat shield which should've been there from the start. More details by the photos.

Something a bit different. I doubt there will be many of these left around. What do you think ?? ❀️

So, what's been happening this week. A few of the jobs that are being, or have been dealt with. Seperate posts to follow.

It's done, and on its way home. It has been a while what with waiting for parts, mostly from Germany. A bit more work than expected especially when it turned up with all the ancilliaries attached. I was expecting a block and head, however it has meant that all the gaskets on these parts are new. Owners just drove in as I post this. πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

Another cracking RS Turbo in fresh from a full rebuild to be set up, sorted out and to get running right. Not the worst to sort out by a long shot. Finished off with it on the ramp aligning up the exhaust in its correct position, fabricating an extra support mounting, then welding a tiny tack by each clamp to stop any slippage between the joints. Used to see three to four of these daily back in the early nineties.... 🫨 Amazed how many have been in recently having survived some 38 years or so πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

The game's a bogie... !!!

So it turns out that the £130 syncro ring cannot be bought. Spoke with two different BMW Mini dealers. All they can supply for these gearboxes are the two shaft seals !! No internal parts available. You need to buy a new transmission they say at over £5000. Wtaf !!! No specialist or aftermarket parts suppliers can get it either. Basically the gearbox is a throw away item. Made by Getrag. I'll bet these syncro rings are in other boxes too. All for a syncromesh reverse gear. Whats wrong with a little crunch going into reverse. This reverse gear problem is very common, and a known issue too. Take you chances with a secondhand box by the looks of it 🀬🀬🀬
