Keep Your Car Happy: Tire Health Matters

Your tires are literally where the rubber meets the road. Here's how to keep them in top shape:

CHECK PRESSURE MONTHLY
Cold weather and time naturally lower tire pressure. Underinflated tires wear faster, reduce fuel efficiency, and affect handling. Find the correct PSI on your driver's side door frame or owner's manual. Check pressure when tires are cold (before driving or at least 3 hours after).

INSPECT TREAD DEPTH
Worn tires are dangerous, especially in wet Scottish weather. Use the penny test: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head upside down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is too worn—time for new tires. Legal minimum is 1.6mm, but we recommend replacing at 3mm for safety.

LOOK FOR DAMAGE
Check for cuts, bulges, or punctures. Even small damage can become dangerous. If you spot anything concerning, get it checked before driving further.

ROTATE REGULARLY
Tire rotation every 5,000-8,000 miles helps them wear evenly and last longer. Ask us about our rotation service.

ALIGNMENT MATTERS
Misaligned wheels cause uneven tire wear and affect handling. If your car pulls to one side or tires wear unevenly, get an alignment check.

Pro Tip: Good tires = better safety, better fuel economy, and longer tire life. It's worth the investment!

Keep Your Car Happy: Fluid Checks 101

Your car relies on several fluids to run smoothly. Here's a quick guide to keeping them topped up:

OIL
The lifeblood of your engine. Check monthly when the engine is cold. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, then check the level. Oil should sit between the min and max marks. If it's dark and gritty, it's time for an oil change.

COOLANT
Prevents your engine from overheating. Check the coolant reservoir when the engine is COLD—never remove the radiator cap on a hot engine! Level should be between min and max marks.

BRAKE FLUID
Essential for safe braking. Check the brake fluid reservoir (usually a translucent plastic container). If the level is low, it could signal worn brake pads or a leak—get it checked.

WINDSCREEN WASHER FLUID
Easy one! Keep it topped up, especially in Scottish weather.

POWER STEERING FLUID
Helps you steer smoothly. Check the reservoir and top up if needed. Low levels can make steering feel stiff.

Pro Tip: Spend 10 minutes monthly checking these fluids. It's the easiest way to catch problems early and avoid expensive repairs down the road.

Keep Your Car Happy: Battery Care Basics

Your car's battery is the heart of your electrical system. Here's how to keep it healthy:

KNOW YOUR BATTERY'S AGE
Car batteries typically last 3-5 years. If yours is approaching that age, consider having it tested. A weak battery can leave you stranded.

KEEP TERMINALS CLEAN
Corrosion on battery terminals prevents proper electrical connection. If you see white, blue, or green crusty buildup, it's time to clean. Mix baking soda with water, scrub gently with an old toothbrush, rinse with clean water, and dry thoroughly.

LISTEN FOR WARNING SIGNS
Slow cranking, dim headlights, or clicking sounds when you turn the key are signs your battery is struggling. Don't ignore these—get it tested before it fails completely.

MINIMIZE ELECTRICAL DRAIN
Leaving lights on, using accessories with the engine off, or having faulty alternators can drain your battery. If your battery keeps dying, there might be a deeper electrical issue.

EXTREME TEMPERATURES MATTER
Cold weather is tough on batteries—they work harder in winter. Hot weather can also shorten battery life. If you live in a harsh climate, your battery might need replacement sooner.

REGULAR TESTING
Have your battery tested annually, especially before winter. A quick test takes minutes and can save you from a breakdown.

Pro Tip: A healthy battery = reliable starts and a fully functioning electrical system. It's worth the investment!

Tyre Care 101

Your tyres are literally where the rubber meets the road. Keeping them in good shape makes a huge difference to safety, fuel efficiency, and how long they last.

Quick tyre health checks you can do:

Tread depth: Use the penny test. Insert a coin into the tread. If you can see the top of the coin, your tread is too worn. Time for new tyres.

Pressure: Check monthly when tyres are cold. You'll find the correct pressure in your car's manual or on the driver's door jamb. Under or over-inflated tyres wear faster and affect handling.

Damage: Look for cuts, bulges, or punctures. Even small damage can become dangerous, so get it checked.

Not sure about your tyres? We stock all makes and sizes, and we can fit them same day. Pop in or give us a ring.
