There’s a real lure to a weekend drive—especially once you leave Hull and hit the country roads around East Yorkshire. Quieter lanes, open views, and a bit of breathing space… but rural roads can catch drivers out fast: narrow bends, hidden junctions, mud/gravel, farm traffic, cyclists and horses.

**UK safety snapshot (DfT reported road casualty stats):**
- **17–24 year olds** are consistently **over‑represented in serious collisions**, with risk higher on **rural roads** and at **weekends**.
- **70+ drivers** tend to have **fewer collisions overall**, but are **more likely to be seriously injured** when a crash happens.
(Source: UK Department for Transport – Reported Road Casualties / RAS tables)

That’s why my **automatic driving lessons in Hull** focus on producing a **thinking driver**—not just someone who can “pass the test”. In an automatic, you’ve got more headspace, so we use it for what matters: **planning, observation, anticipation and decision-making**, building real experience for the roads you’ll actually drive.

**Weekend country-road essentials we practise:**
• Slow in, smooth out (set your speed **before** the bend)
• Look further ahead and read the road surface
• Expect the unexpected after blind corners
• Give space to cyclists, horses and tractors
• Drive to what you can see, not what you hope is there

Want to feel confident on rural routes as well as town driving? Message me to book your **automatic lessons in Hull**.

After 30 years of driving, I’m still learning — and I love that.

I’ve been told I’m ready to apply for my RoSPA Advanced Driving test. I’m proud of the progress so far, but it’s a good reminder that safe, confident driving isn’t something you “finish” — it’s something you keep improving.

If you’ve done RoSPA (or advanced driving), what’s one thing you wish you’d known before the test?

Back from the Easter break and getting back behind the wheel? Here are a few quick learner-driver reminders for the journey home:

- **Plan your route**: check traffic and roadworks before you set off, and build in extra time.
- **Take breaks**: if you’re feeling tired or overwhelmed, stop somewhere safe and reset.
- **Expect busy roads**: keep a bigger following gap and be patient at roundabouts and junctions.
- **Watch for vulnerable road users**: more pedestrians, cyclists and children near parks, villages and services.
- **Mind the speed**: temporary limits and average-speed cameras are common on holiday routes.
- **Phone away**: set Do Not Disturb and let your passenger handle navigation.

If you’re a learner, **pick one skill to focus on** for the drive (mirror checks, lane discipline, or smooth braking) and keep it simple.

Drive safe and take your time.

**Facebook post (UK audience):**

The UK government is exploring the idea of a **graduated driving licence (GDL)** for new drivers — a system used in several countries to help reduce serious collisions among inexperienced motorists.

A GDL could mean **phased driving privileges** for a period after passing the test, for example:
- limits on **late-night driving**
- restrictions on **carrying young passengers**
- stricter rules around **mobile phone use and distractions**
- extra requirements before gaining a full licence

Supporters say it could **improve road safety**, especially for younger drivers. Critics worry it could **limit independence**, particularly for those who rely on driving for work, education, or caring responsibilities.

What do you think — would a graduated licence make UK roads safer, or create unnecessary barriers?

Castle Street in Hull has had a major glow‑up — and if you drive it, you’ll feel the difference.

**What’s changed (and why it matters):**
Hull’s Castle Street/A63 upgrade is all about smoothing traffic flow between the city centre and the Humber Bridge/port routes. The headline change is the **new underpass** and **reworked junctions**, designed to cut congestion, reduce stop‑start queues, and make journeys more predictable.

**What it’s like to drive now:**
- **More “keep moving” than “stop and crawl”**: The biggest difference is fewer long waits at the old bottlenecks.
- **Lane choice matters more**: Approaches can feel faster, but you need to be **in the correct lane earlier** than you might be used to.
- **Feels more like a through‑route**: Once you’re on it, it’s generally a steadier run rather than a series of lights and merges.
- **Watch for changing signage**: New layouts can catch out regular commuters—follow the overhead signs rather than muscle memory.
- **Peak times still bite**: It’s improved, but busy commuter periods can still stack up, especially near key slip roads and city-centre approaches.

**Quick tips if you’re driving it this week:**
✅ Check your route before you set off (sat nav may lag behind new layouts)
✅ Pick your lane early and commit
✅ Expect other drivers to hesitate—leave a bit more space
✅ Stick to the posted limits through the new sections

**Question for Hull drivers:**
Have you found the new Castle Street setup quicker, or just… different?

Navigating the A63
The A63 can be busy and fast-paced, which is often a big worry for my students. But without the stress of downshifting in traffic, you can keep your eyes firmly on the road and your hands on the wheel. We focus on safe merging and keeping a solid following distance. Smooth driving is safe driving.

Even Teachers Never Stop Learning!
This Sunday, I’m headed out for a RoSPA advanced driving assessment. Even as an instructor, I think it’s so important to have my own driving checked and refined by the pros. I know exactly how it feels to have someone watching your every move—it can be a bit nerve-wracking! But whether it’s an advanced course or your very first time behind the wheel, we’re all just working toward being safer on the road. Wish me luck! 🤞
