Elite Driving School

Elite Driving School A Team of professional driver trainers, who encourage reflection and involvement in the learning pro Established in 1989, we've had years to hone our skills.

Elite Driving Schools focus is to help today's young drivers learn the knowledge and skills required to drive safely on today's busy and cluttered roads. And backed by our continued professional development program, our instructors strive to teach a modern training system that reflects on a students progress. Lessons are based on a client centered approach, where students are encouraged to reflect

on performance and given the freedom to explore solutions for improvement. Effectively, by putting them in control over the way that they learn best, produces better drivers in less time than the old traditional rote style of teaching. We are very proud of our past achievements, and excited about what we can acheive in the future. We are very fortunate to have so many customer reviews and we like to let previous customers talk about their experience taking driving lessons with an Elite instructor. Thankfully my friend had Stuart as an Instructor and was telling me how good he was. I felt like I was getting nowhere with my previous instructors so I decided to try out Elite. When I first met my Instructor Stuart he was really friendly and made me feel comfortable! Each lesson got better and better and Stuart was very flexible and easy to book lessons with. I've enjoyed learning to drive with Stuart and will miss our funny and random conversations. I recommend Stuart to anyone and everyone he is such a relaxed Instructor and he strives to get the best out of his pupils! You will have a hard time finding a better Instructor. Very pleased. from Lauran Gentre Hull

I have just passed my driving test first time thanks to my Instructor James, he was a really good teacher and really helped my confidence. I would recommend Elite to other people as they were very helpful and flexible during my intensive driving course. From Samantha Richardson Hull

When I first thought about driving lessons the idea of being behind the wheel terrified me, Tony made me feel completely safe and at ease throughout my lessons and had a lot of patience when it came to my perfectionist nature doing things again and again if I wasn’t completely pleased with myself. My lessons were very flexible, picking me up and dropping me off wherever it was convenient for me and my lessons were always on time. Tony hasn’t just taught me to drive, he’s taught me to have confidence in myself and my abilities and for that I can’t thank him enough. Brilliant driving instructor and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone. from Megan Derbyshire Hedon

I would like to thank Elite and Pete my Instructor who was fantastic in learning me how to drive and pass my test 1st time and with only 2 minors. My girlfriend went with him years ago to learn so I decided I would too and what a great choice it was, couldn't be happier, great instructor who really knows how to get the best from you. Highly recommend anyone to take up lessons with him or Elite. Thank you very much. From Chris Dickinson Hull

I would like to thank you so much for the amount of help you have given me since starting to learn to drive with you. In the past I have had driving instructors who haven't really helped me. But I've had lessons with you for about 2 months and every minute of it has been enjoyable, when it's been hard, it's been hard and you certainly got me through all the difficulties I have had. Today I was unbelievably nervous but you believed in me and gave me the extra confidence I needed. I can't thank you enough for everything, especially moving and working to fit me. Thank you so much. From Victoria Wadforth, Hull

When I began driving I was extremely nervous and I didn't have any confidence what so ever, which made me believe my idea of passing my test quickly was impossible. However, James completely changed the way I felt about driving as he helped me conquer my confidence whilst teaching me every skill I needed to know for my driving test. My driving lessons quickly became enjoyable and much less complicated than I previously thought. I could not have wished for a better driving instructor. James did not waste my time, money and didn't complicate any lesson, he just taught me everything I needed to know for the test and I believe it is down to him why I passed first time. Thank You! From Heather Langton, Thorgumbald

I have just passed my practical driving test, because of my great Driving Instructor James Foston. I was not too keen on driving before I started, however as soon as I met James I was totally at ease due to his easy going and very friendly personality. Not only is he a great person but he is also a calming instructor and helps you through everything. I would like to say thank you once again for getting me the desired pass and also thank you for the fun times I've had with him. Good luck to him for the future as well as the future clients of Elite. From Jake Vinegrad, Hedon

Hi just want to say a massive thanks to Angus and Elite. I have just passed my driving test after taking just 16 hours of lessons. My Instructor certainly knew how to get the best results from me and passed on the skills needed so I could oasis quickly. I also wanted everyone to know my lessons where enjoyable as well as fun but Angus didn't let me off with any mistakes on my lessons, he kept reminding me if it's not right it's wrong. Once again thanks Angus. Goodbye buses, now I can drive to Uni at York. Yippee. From Lloyd Whittleton, Beverly

I booked with Alan of Elite as a friend recommended him. I as very eager as I wanted to get my driving licence as quickly as possible but also nervous at first because my previous instructor was not as good. Alan was brilliant, fantastic with loads of patience, he made my lessons fun and enjoyable. I thought the lessons to be good value for money and will absolutely be recommending Alan and Elite. From Nini Loo, Hull

Thank you Matt very much for everything. I wouldn't have got through it without you, at one point I didn't think I would get there, but thanks to your excellent teaching/coaching and generally supporting me, I did it!!! Well we did it.... Thanks again will be highly recommending you as an instructor. Thanks again Matt and everyone at Elite. From Jodie Curtis, Beverley

I couldn't believe that I had passed first time and it couldn't have been done if it wasn't for James. He's a brilliant Instructor and I always looked forward to every lesson because he explains things really well and is very patient. He's also a great guy to get along with and made me feel comfortable behind the wheel at all times. I would highly recommend Elite Driving School and James to anyone!. From Benjamin Fenwick, Bilton

I really do need to say that Steve is a fantastic instructor, the lessons were comfortable and easy going, and he made it much easier for me to learn than I ever thought it would be. I'm so happy that I passed my test first time around, it's really going to give me independence and it's so nice to finally not have to rely on buses or other people to get around. I can't wait to start driving! From Enya Horton, Swanland

I found Elite on the Internet whilst looking for a quick way to pass. I was very eager to start driving as it was a necessity to pass this summer. I was really nervous at first as I didn't like my previous instructor at all but Alan was the best, he's the most amazing instructor ever, so pleased. He made me feel relaxed and we had great conversations. The lessons were great value and it was money well spent. In would recommend everyone to the school and Alan particularly. From Sid Sharma, Hull

I was recommended Elite as they passed both my brothers. I wanted to pass my driving test before I went to University. I was nervous at first but after a few lessons I felt fine. I had a good Instructor who made the lessons fun, and I felt relaxed when driving. It is good value for money as they put a lot of effort in. My mum booked my lessons as a birthday present, I wanted to pass as I had a car waiting for me, I was just excited to get out there and learn. My Instructor was kind, funny and most importantly she was patient, relaxed and help me pass first time. I enjoyed the whole experience and was given quality training. I would recommend Elite and my Instructor, she was reliable, always on time and gave me the confidence I needed for my test. From Max Bullingham, Beverley

Elite were outstanding. My decision to switch to them proved a wise one. Not only do you get the flexibility, support and value for money you would typically get, but you also receive the adaptable teaching and the kind of instructing that makes you feel at ease from day one. Paul was extremely easy to work with and I could not recommend them highly enough. Thank you Elite! From Jason Byre, Hessle

There are four words every learner driver wants to hear… “I’m pleased to say…” 🚗

And Ehi got to hear them after passing her driving test at Hull Test Centre on her very first attempt!

After all the lessons, junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres and those moments when driving suddenly starts to make sense, it all came down to one test.

And Ehi delivered.

She learned with Elite instructor Keith, who helped prepare her not simply to get through a driving test, but to have the skills and judgement needed to drive independently afterwards.

That's the bit that really matters.

Today the lessons finish. Now the driving begins.

Congratulations, Ehi. First attempt – job done. 👏

ONE fault. FIRST attempt. MANUAL test. 👏

That's quite a result for Malik Abdalla, who has just passed his driving test at Hull Test Centre after learning with Elite instructor Jo Page.

Malik went into his first practical test and came back with his full licence having picked up just one minor driving fault during the entire test.

Results like this aren't about getting lucky on test day. They're built during the lessons beforehand – learning how to make good decisions independently, deal with different road situations and drive safely without needing your instructor sitting alongside you.

That's exactly what Malik managed to demonstrate when it counted.

𝙃𝒐𝙬 𝙢𝒂𝙣𝒚 𝒅𝙧𝒊𝙫𝒊𝙣𝒈 𝒍𝙚𝒔𝙨𝒐𝙣𝒔 𝒘𝙞𝒍𝙡 𝙄—𝙤𝒓 𝒎𝙮 𝙨𝒐𝙣 𝙤𝒓 𝒅𝙖𝒖𝙜𝒉𝙩𝒆𝙧—𝙣𝒆𝙚𝒅?

It is one of the first questions learners and parents ask, and it is completely understandable. People want to know how long learning might take and how much they should budget.

The honest answer is that there is no fixed number that suits everyone.

Progress can be affected by previous experience, confidence, lesson regularity, private practice and how quickly the learner becomes safe and independent without prompts.

That is why we believe learners should not judge progress only by the number of hours they have completed. A better measure is what they can do safely, independently and consistently across different roads and traffic situations.

We have produced a detailed guide explaining:

What affects learning time.
Whether automatic lessons can be quicker.
How private practice can help.
How to recognise test readiness.
Why instructors cannot guarantee an exact number in advance.

Jean passed her automatic driving test at Hull Test Centre at the first attempt after completing her training with instructor Keith Turner.

Effective driving test preparation is not about memorising routes or practising only the manoeuvres that may appear on the test. Learners need to demonstrate safe observations, suitable speed, accurate positioning and sound decisions across a range of everyday driving situations.

The final stage of automatic tuition should help the learner recognise risks independently and respond without relying on frequent guidance from the instructor.

Mock-test conditions and honest feedback can also identify any areas that still require attention before test day.

Congratulations to Jean on her first-time automatic pass at Hull Test Centre with Elite Driving School.

Laura Dawson Barrett passed her manual driving test at York Test Centre at the first attempt after completing her training with instructor Mike Preston.

Good driving test preparation helps learners bring together all the skills developed during their lessons. In a manual vehicle, this includes maintaining effective observations and planning while managing the clutch, gears and speed smoothly.

Learners also need to show that they can respond safely when road and traffic conditions change, without depending on prompts from their instructor.

Preparation should focus on consistent independent driving rather than simply trying to produce one good performance on test day.

Congratulations to Laura on her first-time manual pass at York Test Centre with Elite Driving School — lessons done properly.

Beginner Driving Lessons

Learning how to deal safely with parked vehicles is an important part of beginner driving lessons.

Parked cars can reduce the amount of road available and may hide pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles emerging from driveways and junctions. Learners need to assess the space carefully before deciding whether it is safe to continue.

Good positioning is essential. The driver should leave enough clearance when passing parked vehicles while also considering approaching traffic and the width of the road. When there is not enough room for two vehicles to pass safely, it may be necessary to slow down, stop and allow the other vehicle through.

Learners should also watch for signs that a parked vehicle may move away, or a car door beginning to open. Look for a driver inside the car, or people crossing between cars..

Structured practice helps beginners improve observation, judgement and control without feeling rushed. The aim is to recognise developing risks early and make calm, safe decisions — lessons done properly.

𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬

Starting driving lessons for the first time can feel like a big step, but good beginner training should make the process clear, structured and manageable.

Early lessons usually focus on understanding the car controls, setting up a safe driving position, moving away, steering, stopping and using effective observations. These basic skills form the foundation for everything that follows.

A beginner should not be rushed into difficult roads before they are ready. Lessons should progress at a suitable pace, with each new skill introduced when the learner has enough confidence and control to manage it safely.

Regular practice also helps learners remember routines, improve coordination and build confidence more steadily.

The aim of beginner driving lessons is not simply to get the car moving. It is to develop safe habits, good judgement and a clear understanding of how to respond to different road and traffic situations.

Structured tuition from the start helps create stronger, more confident drivers — lessons done properly.

Training Tips

ADI Part 1 is more demanding than the standard learner theory test. It assesses whether a potential driving instructor has the depth of knowledge required to explain safe driving to other people.

The multiple-choice section contains 100 questions across four categories. Candidates need an overall score of at least 85 and must also achieve at least 20 out of 25 in every category. The hazard perception pass mark is 57 out of 75.

A common mistake is memorising answers without developing a deeper understanding of the subject.

A better approach is to study regularly, use official DVSA materials and connect the theory to real situations encountered while driving. Ask yourself not only what the correct answer is, but why it is correct and how you would explain it to a learner.

That deeper understanding will also support Parts 2 and 3.
