Barbados was meant to be stress free this year. Heading out with the Beatson Motorsport BMW ready for the rally. We were all arriving on Tuesday afternoon so a bit of beach time was expected before the start on Friday night. A txt message on Tuesday night changed that.
Kyle Gregg had a big accident (rolling and sliding into a rock face) on the King of the Hill rally sprint. This event ran the same weekend as the Jim Clark. He asked if I would be able to help Brett and the Pro Auto works team, who look after his car is Barbados, get the car ready for the start. This lead to a very busy time in the workshop and no beach for me.
Just as Kyle’s car was being finished at 4pm Barbados time (9pm UK) on Thursday a head gasket issue raised its head on another Fiesta in Brett’s workshop. A few calls and someone from M-Sport went in to leave a head gasket and parts out to be collected.
Remember George who took the BMW to Heathrow for us? He is a retired farm manager and was helping someone with the silage when he got a call,
Hi George can you go to M-sport collect a head gasket, then to Newcastle airport fly to Heathrow and then out to Barbados? When Neil? You need to be in Newcastle airport by 4am tomorrow so now really.
Silage trailer parked, quick change and George headed off to M-Sport on Leg 1 of his trip.
Mid day Friday Kyle’s car finished and tested, it was back to get the BMW ready for the start for John and Craig. Friday night was One super special at Bushy park and as the start drew closer the clouds did the same. Just as John left service on slicks a downpour started. Welcome to Barbados John, your first stage on slicks in the rain.
George also made an appearance with the head gasket at this point. Once again asked to help the Pro Auto works team change the head gasket on the fiesta after the first stage made for a late night / early morning. 3 hrs later the fiesta was on the circuit running to check the data.
With central service this year it meant a double shift, a service on Kyle’s fiesta then across to do a service on the BMW.
John and Craig lost around a minute on Saturday when a clutch slave cylinder failed. They managed to get the car back to service and have the cylinder changed. This was the only issue for the BMW during the event.
At the end of the event Kyle Gregg / Kreigg Yearwood finished 10.6s behind Stuart Maloney / Kristian Yearwood in 2nd. Our other customers who are ran by Pro Auto Works, Jeff Panton / Matt Edwards were 6th, Tarik Minott / Harry Walshaw 17th with John Marshall / Craig Wallace finishing 49th on their first trip to the island.
All that’s was left to do was pack up and get everything ready to fly home and then have a day by the pool.
