993 vs 964… which one are you choosing? 👀

These two air-cooled icons were in the workshop recently, each for very different jobs.

The 964 was in to rectify a power steering leak, while the 993 underwent a much more extensive list of work, including:
-Engine out to rectify multiple oil leaks
-New gearbox cooler lines
-Diagnosis and replacement of a water-damaged gearbox ECU
-New exhaust silencers
…and plenty more.

It’s always satisfying getting these classics back to the standard they deserve. Whether it’s a straightforward repair or a major engine-out job, attention to detail makes all the difference.

A series of unfortunate events for this Porsche 996 Carrera 4S…

This car arrived with us after visiting several garages and another specialist, all trying to get to the bottom of a persistent cylinder 6 misfire. Along the way, various parts had already been replaced, including ignition coils, spark plugs and camshaft sensors, but the fault remained.

Rather than continuing to replace parts… We carried out a thorough diagnosis. With no obvious external faults found, we decided the next step was to investigate internally.

Unfortunately, the engine was suffering from bore score across multiple cylinders, with cylinder 6 showing zero compression.

While it’s never the diagnosis you want to deliver, identifying the root cause means the problem can finally be fixed properly.

The owner loves the car and has decided to go ahead with a full engine rebuild. The engine is already out and scheduled for rebuild.

At SVP, we believe in diagnosing the fault first—then replacing only what’s needed.

Sometimes a relatively small leak turns into a much bigger job…

This Porsche 997 came into the workshop with a coolant leak from the two main engine bay water pipes. Unfortunately, replacing these pipes requires the engine to be removed.

With the engine already out, it made perfect sense to tackle a number of preventative maintenance items at the same time. We fitted a new clutch, replaced rusty coolant hose clips, renewed various exhaust fixings, and rectified a few minor oil leaks including the timing chain tensioner seals and rear main seal (RMS).

It’s a great example of why it’s worth looking at the bigger picture. Carrying out these jobs while access is available saves both time and labour in the long run, helping to keep the car reliable and avoid future engine-out repairs.

A reminder that we don’t just repair and service Porsches – we also carry out full four-wheel alignment and geometry setup in-house for any Make / Model.

This week alone we’ve completed geometry on a 987 Cayman following replacement front coffin arms and tuning forks, as well as a Porsche 997 to ensure everything was set back to factory specification.

Any time suspension components are replaced, or if your car is pulling to one side, wearing tyres unevenly or simply doesn’t feel quite right, having the geometry checked is one of the best investments you can make. Correct alignment not only improves handling and steering feel, but also helps maximise tyre life.

This Porsche 996 Turbo has been in with us for some preventative maintenance and preservation work.

Jobs carried out included replacement brake pipes, new Tiptronic gearbox Transfer Case Housing gaskets (a common issue – and the second set we’ve replaced this week!), followed by a thorough underbody clean and protective treatment to help preserve this fantastic example.

Keeping on top of these common maintenance items is the key to ensuring these Mezger-powered cars continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.
