Something all my students hear me talk about alot.
What Are Car Mirrors Actually Made Of and why we need to compare the picture .
( A requested post from a parent )
Interior Rear View Mirror
Most interior mirrors are flat glass mirrors.
That means:
🔎 What you see is a true reflection
📏 Distances are realistic
🚗 Cars appear roughly the size and distance they actually are
Many have a night setting which reduces glare from headlights, but the mirror itself is still flat.
Door Mirrors
Your side mirrors are usually convex mirrors.
Convex means they curve slightly outward.
That curve does something important:
🔹 It gives you a wider field of vision
🔹 It reduces blind spots
🔹 It makes vehicles appear smaller and further away than they actually are
That is why you often see the warning:
“Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.”
It is not just a sticker.
It is physics.
Why This Matters for Learners
MSM Is Not a Routine
It is a Safety System.
M - Mirrors
Check early. Check calmly. Check with purpose.
Not a flick. A deliberate scan.
S – Signal
Only after you know it is safe.
M – Manoeuvre
Move smoothly, not suddenly.
Mirrors tell you the story of what is happening around you before you change that story.
The Blind Spot Reality
Convex mirrors reduce blind spots.
They do not eliminate them.
There is always an area your mirrors cannot see.
That is where cyclists, motorcyclists and small cars disappear.
Blind spot checks are not optional extras.
They are:
🚲 Life protection for vulnerable road users
🚗 Protection against side swipe collisions
🧠 A discipline that prevents complacency
A learner who becomes comfortable too early can unconsciously stop scanning properly.
That is normal.
It is human nature.
The brain relaxes when things feel familiar.
Mirror discipline is built through repetition until it becomes automatic.
A Tip for You as a Parent
It is natural to want to help with mirror prompts.
However, stepping back slightly can be powerful.
Instead of saying:
“Check your mirrors.”
Try:
“What can you see behind you?”
“Is anyone gaining on us?”
“Who would be affected if you move now?”
This makes her brain work.
That is how independence is built.
Final Thought
Handling gears and positioning is mechanical skill.
Mirror work and blind spot checks are judgement skill.
Mechanical skill passes tests.
Judgement skill prevents collisions.
Observations help sharpening awareness so comfort never turns into complacency.
