Merge in turn. Brings out the worst in drivers.
Under Rule 134 of the UK Highway Code, merging in turn (or zip merging) is recommended in congested, slow-moving traffic—such as near roadworks or incidents—if it is safe and appropriate. Drivers should use both lanes fully up to the point of merging and then take turns alternating like a zip.
How It Works
Use full capacity: Stay in your lane and use all available road space until the physical merge point.
Alternate entry: Take turns letting one car from each lane merge into the open lane.
Low speeds only: The guidance applies strictly during heavy congestion and very slow speeds; it is not recommended at high speeds
