A vintage 6C Alfa got some new mains a while ago.

They're quite tricky things, because the bevel gear meshes with a vertical shaft which takes the drive up to the cams. The other gear in the crank drives a cross shaft which is in the sump, so positioning is absolutely vital on these.

A teeny-tiny Peugeot Quadrilette crank and rods remetalled last year (yes, I'm that far behind with posting stuff!)

I think it had been stored in a bucket of water, but given lack of alternatives and the fact it all crack tested ok, I made it all work.

Here's the solution to the brazed small end: make new rods!

Luckily it was only a twin cylinder (veteran Wolseley, the same as I white metalled last year).

The billet started at 8.5kg and the finished rod was under 1kg. I re-used the original cap, but made new bronzes and metalled them.

It all got rushed at the end, so I didn't put any rounding on the small end which still drives me mad!!! But it wafted down to Brighton on the veteran run at the end of last year with no problems at all. HUZZAH!

I wish I had the confidence of whoever brazed up the small end of this con rod and put it back in the engine 🤣

Something a bit different... Last summer I needed to make a pair of drive couplings for a Vauxhall 30-98. Lots of swarf to make a big block of steel into a nice, delicate fl**ge.
One of the threads was something ridiculous like 2" BSP left hand, but I dug out my home made thread insert holder and breezed through it 😉

When the only available carbide tipped tool for the line borer is too short, you have to make it longer.

It's only 8mm dia, so quite fiddly! The original tool and inserts are available from Serdi UK
