Most drivers never think about their gearbox. Until it becomes a very expensive problem.
Automatic and manual gearboxes both rely on clean, properly conditioned fluid to operate correctly. Over time that fluid degrades, contamination builds up, and components start to wear faster than they should. The gearbox rarely fails dramatically. It deteriorates gradually, shifting becomes rougher, response gets sluggish, and by the time it becomes obvious something is wrong, the damage is already done.
A gearbox rebuild or replacement can run into thousands of pounds. A fluid change as part of a scheduled service costs a fraction of that.
