🚗 5 Ways to BEAT Driving Test Anxiety (and actually pass!)

Most people don’t fail their driving test because they can’t drive... they fail because the nerves take over. 🧠 With UK average pass rates sitting at just 48.5%, staying calm is half the battle.

Here is how to keep your cool:

✅ 1. Distract Your Brain
The 24 hours before your test is prime overthinking time. Don't sit at home visualizing failure. Go for a walk, see a movie, or meet friends. Keep your brain too busy to spiral.

✅ 2. Burn Off the Cortisol
Sitting still makes anxiety worse. A quick 20-minute walk on the morning of your test helps lower stress hormones and settles those "stomach butterflies."

✅ 3. Watch the Caffeine
We all love a coffee, but too much = shaky hands and a racing heart. Eat a light, balanced meal and keep the caffeine intake normal (or lower than usual!).

✅ 4. Prioritize "Pedal Feel"
Today isn't the day for a fashion statement. Wear light, breathable clothes and—most importantly—flat, comfortable shoes so you can feel the bite point perfectly.

✅ 5. Slow. Everything. Down.
The examiner isn't looking for speed or perfection; they’re looking for safety. Take that extra second at junctions. 🐢

💡Trust your instructor’s judgment—they wouldn't have let you book it if you weren't ready!

🍀 Good luck - you've got this!

DRIVING TEST CHANGES:

Via Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency

We’re making some subtle but meaningful changes to the practical driving test. 🚗

You may have seen that we have been trialling changes to the driving test at 20 driving test centres.

As part of the trial, learners drove on routes containing more high-speed, rural roads during their driving test, where location allowed. Now, we are rolling out the changes to all driving test centres in Great Britain from 24 November 2025.

As well as increasing the amount of time spent on higher-speed roads, we are:

✅ reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3
✅ lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7
✅ adding flexibility to the independent driving segment, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test

These changes are designed to help improve road safety by better replicating the conditions motorists face in the real world. They won’t affect the skills needed to take a driving test.

Massive well done Ellie Harrison you've only gone and done it 1st time as well amazing 👏 xx

THE REALITY OF LEARNING TO DRIVE

Before you start your driving journey, it’s important to keep these things in mind…

1️⃣ Driving is not just about moving a car from A to B.
You’re learning to control a powerful machine that, if handled carelessly, can cause serious injury or even cost lives.

2️⃣ The process won’t be instant, easy, or cheap.
Developing the coordination, judgement, and awareness to drive safely takes time and practice until it becomes second nature.

3️⃣ From the very first lesson, you carry legal responsibility for yourself, your vehicle, and the safety of others.
Being a learner doesn’t remove that responsibility or protect you from consequences if you break the law.

4️⃣ Knowledge is power when it comes to road safety.
The theory test isn’t a box-ticking exercise it’s the foundation of safe driving. Revise properly and aim high, because what you learn could one day save lives.

5️⃣ Everyone learns at their own pace.
Don’t compare yourself to others or feel pressured to keep up.
Progress is progress, and taking a little longer is far better than rushing and putting safety at risk.

6️⃣ Trust your Instructor.
Their guidance is current, professional, and tailored to you. Well-meaning friends or family can offer advice, but your Instructor knows best when you’re ready to move forward or book a test.

7️⃣ Passing your test is just the beginning.
It means you’re safe enough to continue learning on your own. Experience makes a good driver – and we never stop learning.

Enjoy the journey ❤️

As driving instructors we can only advise people about their readiness to take a test!

You may think you are driving well when the instructor is:

✅Telling you when to change gear!
✅Asking you what the speed limit is!
✅Talking you through every manoeuvre!
✅Telling you which lane to be in!
✅Reminding you which exit to come off of on a roundabout because you forget!
✅Helping you when you can’t workout if there is enough space for you to get your car through!

If all or any of the above apply to you, then you are not test ready!

When the door shuts and it’s just you and the examiner, the car is the loneliest place to be, when you make a mistake and your brain goes to mush it’s the worst feeling ever!

Remember those family and friends who urge you to just have a go for the experience, aren’t the ones having to go through it, people have very selective memory’s when it comes to driving and tests!

Ask anyone who has failed a test if it was a nice experience!

Remember it’s YOU doing the test, no one else, no phone to google answers, no help from anyone else just YOU!

If you are up to standard, you will still be nervous, but you won’t be doubtful of your ability!

Go look in the mirror and have a straight talk with yourself!

This is a skill for life.
It saves YOUR life and other road users lives..
